FUOYE Honours Air Peace Boss with Doctorate for Aviation Excellence, Humanitarian Impact

The Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE) has conferred an honorary Doctor of Business Administration (Honoris Causa) on Dr Allen Ifechukwu Onyema, Chairman and Founder of Air Peace, in recognition of his outstanding contributions to Nigeria’s aviation sector, humanitarian efforts, and unwavering commitment to national unity.
According to a statement signed by the Head of Corporate Communications at Air Peace, Dr Ejike Ndiulo, the prestigious award was presented during FUOYE’s 9th Convocation Ceremony, a grand occasion that brought together eminent personalities from academia, government, and the business community.
The event also honoured other distinguished Nigerians, including former Attorneys General of the Federation and Ministers of Justice, Senator Kanu Agabi, SAN, and Chief Christopher Adebayo Ojo, SAN, as well as Chief Olusegun Alebiosu, Managing Director of First Bank Nigeria.
In his address, FUOYE’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Abayomi Fasina, commended Dr Onyema for his visionary leadership and philanthropy, particularly his selfless evacuations of distressed Nigerians from crisis-hit regions.
He highlighted Onyema’s pivotal role in transforming Nigeria’s aviation landscape through Air Peace, the country’s largest airline, which has bridged connectivity gaps, created thousands of jobs, and made air travel more accessible.
“Dr Onyema’s remarkable contributions extend far beyond business. His patriotism and humanitarian interventions have set an example for generations to come. This honour is a testament to his extraordinary impact,” Fasina stated.
Dr Onyema’s journey to becoming one of Nigeria’s most influential entrepreneurs is marked by resilience, innovation, and a commitment to national development.
Through Air Peace, he has redefined air travel in West Africa, ensuring safety, affordability, and reliability in a challenging industry.
Beyond aviation, Onyema has demonstrated an unparalleled commitment to humanity.
In 2019, when xenophobic attacks in South Africa endangered the lives of Nigerians, he personally deployed Air Peace aircraft to evacuate stranded citizens at no cost.
This act of kindness earned him national and international recognition, solidifying his reputation as a selfless leader.
Through the Foundation for Ethnic Harmony in Nigeria (FEHN), Onyema has also championed peacebuilding and conflict resolution, training thousands of youths in leadership and non-violence strategies.
His relentless drive for unity and social development has made a lasting impact across communities in Nigeria.
In his acceptance speech, Dr Onyema expressed deep gratitude to FUOYE and reaffirmed his faith in Nigeria’s potential.
He urged students to embrace integrity, hard work, and service to humanity, stressing the importance of education and entrepreneurship in national transformation.
“Education should not rest solely on the shoulders of the Federal Government. The private sector must actively engage through investments, donations, and scholarships to foster academic excellence and innovation,” Onyema stated.
FUOYE’s recognition of Dr Onyema underscores the university’s commitment to celebrating individuals who exemplify excellence, innovation, and selflessness.
The award serves as an inspiration to young Nigerians, reinforcing the message that true success is not just about financial accomplishments but also about making a meaningful impact on society.
As Nigeria forges ahead in its journey towards economic and social advancement, leaders like Dr Allen Ifechukwu Onyema stand as beacons of ethical leadership and nation-building.
His story is a compelling reminder that greatness lies in using one’s success to uplift others, foster peace, and contribute to a more unified and prosperous Nigeria.
