FAAN Shuts Down Enugu Airport Temporarily for Emergency Runway Repairs

…All Flights to Be Diverted as FAAN Undertakes Urgent Rehabilitation Work from April 22 to May 6

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria has announced the temporary closure of the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu, to enable emergency rehabilitation works on the airport’s runway following a sudden rupture in its asphalt surface.

According to a statement signed by Mrs Obiageli Orah, Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection at FAAN, the closure will be in effect from 22nd April to 6th May 2025, during which period no aircraft will be allowed to take off or land at the airport.

FAAN explained that the decision to suspend operations was driven by a safety imperative, after discovering “a sudden and significant rupture in the asphalt surface at a critical section of the runway.”

The agency stated that emergency repairs were necessary to ensure the integrity of the runway and the safety of flight operations.

“In compliance with Nigerian civil aviation regulations, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has, therefore, closed the runway during this period,” the statement said.

The Authority further appealed for understanding from passengers, airlines, and other stakeholders, noting that all flights scheduled for the airport would be diverted to nearby airports during the period of closure.

“This action aligns with FAAN’s unwavering commitment to passenger safety and the modernisation of airport infrastructure,” the statement emphasised.

“We sincerely apologise for the late and unexpected notice regarding this closure,” the Authority added.

FAAN reaffirmed its dedication to maintaining safe skies, secure airports, and seamless travel experiences, assuring the public that the repairs would be completed as swiftly as possible to minimise inconvenience.

Travelers are advised to stay in contact with their respective airlines for updated flight information and alternative arrangements.
