Akanu Ibiam Int’l Airport to Reopen on Monday Following Emergency Runway Repairs, FAAN assures

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria has announced the reopening of the Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu, Enugu State, for flight operations on Monday, 28th April 2025, following the successful completion of emergency runway repairs.

The announcement marks a significant relief for travellers and stakeholders who have had to adjust their plans due to the temporary closure of the airport.

The FAAN had, on 18th April 2025, revealed that a sudden and substantial rupture had appeared in the asphalt surface at a critical section of the runway, necessitating an immediate shutdown to facilitate emergency repairs.

The Authority subsequently scheduled the repair works to commence on 22nd April, with an initial projection for completion and reopening on 6th May 2025.

However, owing to the diligent efforts of the engineers working in collaboration with FAAN, the rehabilitation works were completed ahead of schedule.

Following thorough assessments and clearances, the runway has now been deemed safe for landings and take-offs.

According to a statement signed by Mrs Obiageli Orah, Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection at FAAN, the agency extended heartfelt appreciation to all airport users and stakeholders for their understanding and cooperation throughout the repair period.

FAAN also tendered an apology for the inconvenience caused by the closure, reaffirming that its actions were guided entirely by a commitment to ensuring the safety of passengers and aircraft.

“FAAN sincerely apologises for the inconvenience but assures the public that all actions were taken in the interest of safety,” the statement read.

The reopening of Akanu Ibiam International Airport is expected to restore full connectivity for the South-East region and facilitate seamless travel for both domestic and international passengers.

FAAN reiterated its commitment to upholding its mission of safe skies, secure airports, and seamless travel across all Nigerian airports.
