Aero Contractors Pays Out N257m in Passenger Refunds, Signals Stronger Consumer Protection

Aero Contractors has made substantial progress in passenger compensation, paying out a total of N257,195,724.39 in refunds between January and August 2025.
The figure represents a 137 per cent rise when compared with N108,308,037.40 paid during the same period in 2024, and nearly eight times the N32,766,652.30 recorded in 2023.
The latest data suggests that airlines are increasingly adhering to the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority’s (NCAA) Regulations 2023, Part 19, which places emphasis on consumer rights and passenger care.
In addition to direct refunds, Aero Contractors has also shouldered the cost of passenger welfare through hotel accommodation (HOTAC).
Verified records show that between January and July 2025, the airline spent N6,083,229 to lodge affected travellers at reputable facilities, including Cocos Hotel and Grand Cubana Hotel in Abuja, NOCY Castle Hotel, Kim Royal Hotel, JC42 Apartment in Asaba, and Mayor & Diplomat Hotel in Lagos.
The NCAA described these figures as evidence of “remarkable improvement in compliance” across the sector, noting that enforcement measures are beginning to yield tangible results.
While acknowledging the harsh realities of Nigeria’s aviation landscape – ranging from volatile fuel prices to foreign exchange shortages – the regulator pledged to maintain its stance on passenger rights.
“The Authority will continue to protect the rights of all stakeholders,” the NCAA stated, adding that it would ensure airlines remain accountable to the travelling public.
The record growth in refunds and accommodation support comes at a time when the industry faces intense scrutiny over service quality, delays, and cancellations. Analysts suggest that the figures, though reflective of operational challenges, may also help rebuild consumer trust in Nigeria’s aviation sector.
