FAAN Steps Up with New ISO Framework for Safer, Greener Airports

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has taken a significant step towards enhancing operational excellence and environmental responsibility with the unveiling of its Integrated ISO Policy.
The new initiative is aimed at deepening quality, safety, and sustainability standards across all airports under its management.
The policy was formally unveiled on Monday, 21 October 2025, by the Managing Director/Chief Executive of FAAN, Mrs Olubunmi Kuku, who was represented by the Director of Human Resources and Administration, Dr Luqman Emiola.
In her opening remarks, the Director of Special Duties, Mrs Obiageli Orah, explained that the ISO audit process is designed to measure FAAN’s commitment to quality service delivery and ethical business conduct, with particular emphasis on customer satisfaction and environmental management.
She described the integrated ISO framework as a milestone in the Authority’s pursuit of operational excellence.
The Integrated ISO Policy brings together two globally recognised standards – ISO 9001:2015 Quality Management System (QMS) and ISO 14001:2015 Environmental Management System (EMS) – into a single framework.
This fusion, according to FAAN, will institutionalise a culture of service quality, operational safety, and sustainable practices across its network of airports.
Management disclosed that about 70 percent of the certification process has already been completed, while external auditors are expected in November to verify compliance and address identified gaps. The Authority is targeting full ISO certification by December 2025.
In his goodwill message, the Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Mr Henry Agbebire, commended the Managing Director and the Directorate of Special Duties for spearheading the initiative.
He reaffirmed FAAN’s unwavering commitment to embedding quality, safety, and sustainability across all operational processes, pledging continued management support until full certification is attained.
Mrs Kuku, in her remarks delivered by Dr Emiola, stressed that the ISO Policy reinforces FAAN’s operational mantra that “if it is not documented, it is considered not done.”
She explained that the policy serves as a working document to guide internal audits across all directorates, ensuring consistency, transparency, and accountability in the Authority’s operations.
She further noted that the integrated management system will help FAAN improve service delivery, strengthen safety oversight, and advance environmental stewardship – aligning the Authority’s operations with international best practices.
FAAN reiterated its commitment to managing Nigeria’s airports in a manner that is safe, secure, efficient, and environmentally responsible.
The Authority also pledged continued efforts to protect the environment, support host communities, and provide a conducive and inclusive workplace for its staff.
The FAAN Management was commended for its consistent support, emphasising that the ISO certification would not only enhance the Authority’s credibility but also strengthen Nigeria’s aviation industry in the global arena.
