NiMet Deepens Managerial Capacity with Executive Leadership Programme to Boost Operational Efficiency
The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has taken another significant step in strengthening its institutional capacity with the successful completion of a two-day Executive Leadership Programme (ELP) on Strategic Management in the Public Sector.
The intensive training, organised in collaboration with the Institute of Strategic Management of Nigeria (Chartered), brought together senior and mid-level management staff for an in-depth immersion in modern managerial principles and performance-driven leadership.
Declaring the programme open, NiMet’s Director-General and Chief Executive Officer, Professor Charles Anosike, underscored the critical link between sound management practices and national development.
“No country need be poor if it has people and good management,” he stated. “Today, we are gathered here to learn and grow together, and ensure that we continue to demonstrate capacity to manage the adaptive challenges of climate change. Continuous improvement means getting better every day. The key to operational success in growing uncertainty lies in the ability of managers to demonstrate a multidimensional approach to performance.”
Professor Anosike noted that management was fundamentally designed to reduce chaos, instil order, and improve organisational efficiency.
In NiMet’s context, he said, this required consistent commitment to establishing stability, driving operational excellence, and fostering trust and teamwork across the Agency.

“In that regard, our work requires that we consistently and committedly seek to establish order and stability to drive operational excellence, challenging and respecting our team members, and by so doing we grow trust and teamwork,” he added.
Over the two days, participants engaged in a series of high-impact sessions designed to enhance their strategic thinking, leadership capacity, and adaptability in a rapidly evolving meteorological landscape.
Key components of the programme included succession planning to strengthen future leadership pipelines; stakeholders’ engagement to deepen collaboration with government, industry, and the public; and financial management to reinforce prudent budgeting, expenditure control, and risk mitigation.
Other modules covered public entrepreneurship and innovation – encouraging the use of creative approaches and public-private partnership models to improve service delivery – as well as the strategic leadership and management grid, which explored the balance between managerial efficiency and inspirational leadership.
Participants also examined organisational culture, ethics, and team leadership, focusing on building a transparent, collaborative, and values-driven workplace.
Skill-building through strategy games and simulations further helped sharpen decision-making, problem-solving, and group dynamics, ensuring that managers are better equipped to navigate growing uncertainties associated with climate variability and evolving operational demands.
The initiative, NiMet said, aligns with its broader commitment to continuous professional development and operational excellence.
By upgrading the managerial capacity of its workforce, the Agency aims to ensure the sustained delivery of accurate, timely, and reliable meteorological services critical to national planning, economic growth, and climate resilience.
NiMet reiterated that strengthening its human capital remains central to achieving its mandate and supporting Nigeria’s sustainable development agenda.
