NDLEA arrests India-bound businessman with cocaine, seizes N3.6bn worth of drugs in Lagos

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has arrested a 48-year-old businessman, Nwankwo Innocent Onyebuchi, at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos, for allegedly attempting to traffic 1.550 kilogrammes of cocaine to India.

The arrest was made as the suspect was preparing to board a Qatar Airways flight to New Delhi, India, at Terminal II of the Lagos airport.

According to the NDLEA, the cocaine was concealed in the side walls and railings of his check-in bag in a factory-fitted compartment, apparently designed to evade detection during routine checks.

Nwankwo, a marble dealer based in Lagos, reportedly told investigators that he had liquidated his business and other assets to raise N23 million, which he paid for the consignment. He allegedly expected to sell the cocaine in India for as much as N100 million.

The NDLEA said the suspect’s arrest effectively ended his plan to make quick money through illicit drug trafficking. He remains in custody and is expected to face prosecution.

The agency’s latest operations also uncovered a massive stockpile of controlled medicines and illicit drugs in Lagos and other parts of the country.

Commenting on the operations, NDLEA Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (retd.), commended the officers and personnel of the MMIA, Lagos, Kano, Kwara, Edo, Plateau, Oyo and Delta Commands for the arrests and seizures.
