In a significant legislative move aimed at bolstering the operational efficiency and financial sustainability of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), a public hearing was held yesterday – 22 July 2025 – on a bill seeking to amend the Agency’s Establishment Act of 2022.

The proposed amendment, sponsored by Hon. Isiaq Abiodun Akinlade, former Chairman of the House Committee on Aviation Technology, is designed to introduce a clear and comprehensive framework for cost recovery across multiple sectors, with a particular focus on the non-aviation sectors of the economy.

The public hearing, convened by the House Committee on Aviation Technology, attracted a wide array of stakeholders from national and international organisations, including the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), trade unions, and former Director-Generals and directors of NiMet. Participants contributed through both oral and written submissions, underscoring the broad relevance of the bill.

Delivering a detailed presentation, Professor Charles Anosike, Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of NiMet, underscored the significance of the amendment, stating that cost recovery is a globally recognised standard essential for the sustainability of national meteorological services.

He emphasised that the reforms would empower NiMet to improve infrastructure, ensure safety, promote operational efficiency, and enhance the welfare of its workforce.

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, represented at the event by the Deputy Chief Whip, reaffirmed the National Assembly’s dedication to fostering a people-oriented legislative agenda.

He noted that strengthening institutions such as NiMet is key to addressing climate change, mitigating the impact of hazardous weather events, and building the resilience of vulnerable communities.

He further highlighted the role of robust MDAs in driving national development and ensuring transparency in public service delivery.

In his closing address, Hon. Tajudeen Kareem Abisodun, Chairman of the House Committee on Aviation Technology, lauded the constructive engagement of stakeholders and pledged that the committee would diligently review all inputs before delivering amendments that are consistent with national laws and interests.

He reiterated the critical role NiMet plays in safeguarding lives and property across air, land, and maritime domains, calling for a united front in strengthening the Agency’s capacity to meet its obligations.

The proposed amendment is expected to usher in a new era of accountability and enhanced service delivery for NiMet, positioning the Agency to effectively respond to both economic and environmental demands.
