The British Government has awarded the highly coveted Chevening and Commonwealth scholarships to 82 exceptional Nigerian students for the 2024 academic year.

These scholarships will enable the recipients to pursue master’s and PhD programmes at prestigious institutions across the United Kingdom.

According to a statement released on Friday by the Senior Communications and Public Diplomacy Officer of the British High Commission in Abuja, Atinuke Akande-Alegbe, the 2024 cohort includes 32 scholars who have been selected for the Chevening scholarships, while an impressive 50 students have been awarded the Commonwealth scholarships.

“The British Government has awarded 82 Nigerians the prestigious Chevening and Commonwealth scholarships to study a wide range of master’s degrees and PhD programmes in the UK in 2024.

“This year, 32 scholars received the Chevening scholarships, and 50 scholars have been awarded the Commonwealth scholarship so far,” the statement highlighted.

The rigorous selection process, known for its competitiveness, culminated in a pre-departure ceremony held on Thursday in Abuja.

The event, which brought together scholars from the capital and surrounding regions, served as a platform to commend their achievements and prepare them for their academic journey in the UK.

A similar ceremony is scheduled to take place next week in Lagos, where the Deputy Head of Mission, Abby Bernard, will host scholars from Lagos and neighbouring cities.

During the Abuja ceremony, British Deputy High Commissioner, Gill Lever, congratulated the scholars and reaffirmed the UK’s commitment to fostering Nigeria’s educational development.

“The UK continues to support the educational development of Nigerians and remains transparent and inclusive in the selection process across the board,” Lever remarked.

She also encouraged the recipients to excel in their studies, serve as exemplary ambassadors for Nigeria, and leverage their experiences abroad to drive positive change upon their return.

Adding to the Deputy High Commissioner’s remarks, Idowu Akintade, Director of Operations at the British Council Nigeria, urged the scholars to build strong networks during their stay in the UK.

“We hope the skills and knowledge you gain from this scholarship opportunity prepare you to make a positive impact on Nigeria’s development priorities.

“I encourage you all to build a strong network and continue to be great ambassadors of the prestigious Commonwealth and Chevening Scholarships,” Akintade stated.

Chevening and Commonwealth Scholarships are awarded to individuals who demonstrate exceptional intellectual ability, leadership potential, and a strong commitment to the development of their home country.

The British High Commission also noted that Nigeria boasts a robust alumni network, with over 4,500 scholars (3,000 Commonwealth and 1,500 Chevening) who continue to make significant contributions to Nigeria’s development across various sectors.
