…Honoured for Transformational Leadership and Strategic Partnerships

The Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), Professor Charles Anosike, has been named Aviation Sector CEO of the Year 2024 by Independent Newspapers Limited.

The prestigious honour, conferred by the Board of Editors, recognises his proactive leadership and transformational efforts within a short period at the helm of NiMet.

The nomination was formally presented to Professor Anosike at his office in Abuja by Mr Steve Omanufeme, Managing Director and Editor-in-Chief of Independent Newspapers.

While reading the nomination letter, Omanufeme emphasised that the recognition stemmed from Anosike’s commitment to revamping NiMet and its crucial contributions to various socio-economic sectors through strategic partnerships with both local and international institutions.

The Independent Newspapers Board of Editors commended NiMet’s issuance of early warnings, particularly in mitigating the devastating impact of floods – a climate change-induced menace threatening farmlands, properties, and lives across Nigeria.

Furthermore, the award committee acknowledged NiMet’s landmark collaborations, particularly its partnership with the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) to enhance disease preparedness and response for climate-sensitive illnesses such as cholera and malaria.

This initiative has significantly improved predictive models and risk assessments by correlating climate patterns with disease outbreaks.

The nomination also highlighted the successful re-accreditation of NiMet’s Regional Training Centre in Oshodi, Lagos, by the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO).

This accomplishment, the editors noted, reflects NiMet’s commitment to human capital development and capacity building, positioning the agency as a leading meteorological institution in Africa.

In his acceptance speech, Professor Anosike expressed gratitude to Independent Newspapers for considering him worthy of such a prestigious honour.

“This honour will spur me on to do more towards fulfilling NiMet’s mandate as enshrined in law and meeting the expectations of Nigerians and critical stakeholders,” he stated.

He also acknowledged the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, SAN, for his unwavering support, dedicating the award to the hardworking staff and management of NiMet.

The investiture ceremony will take place on Saturday, 15 March 2025, at 6:00 pm at the Convention Centre, Eko Hotels & Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos.
