In a decisive move to enhance Nigeria’s border security through technology-driven solutions, the Comptroller-General of Customs (CGC), Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, MFR, has reaffirmed the Nigeria Customs Service’s (NCS) commitment to leveraging advanced surveillance and intelligence tools.

This was the focal point of discussions during CGC Adeniyi’s courtesy visit to the National Security Adviser (NSA), Malam Nuhu Ribadu, on Thursday, 6th March 2025.

The Customs chief highlighted the Service’s ongoing deployment of Geospatial technology to reinforce surveillance, intelligence gathering, and enforcement across the country’s land and maritime borders.

Speaking during the engagement, CGC Adeniyi underscored the crucial role of technology in modern border management, stressing that the integration of advanced solutions is imperative in tackling smuggling, trafficking, and other transborder crimes.

“Technology remains the key to effective border management in today’s rapidly evolving security landscape. The Nigeria Customs Service is committed to deploying Geospatial technology and other innovative tools to enhance our surveillance, intelligence gathering, and enforcement capabilities. These efforts are designed to align with international best practices while addressing Nigeria’s unique border security challenges,” CGC Adeniyi stated.

He further elaborated that these technology-driven initiatives would not only enhance Nigeria’s capacity to curb illicit trade but also facilitate seamless and legitimate cross-border transactions, ensuring efficiency in trade facilitation.

In response, the National Security Adviser, Malam Nuhu Ribadu, lauded the Nigeria Customs Service for its proactive approach to border security and trade facilitation.

He acknowledged the indispensable role of technology in safeguarding Nigeria’s territorial integrity and reinforcing national security.

“The Customs Service has demonstrated a commendable commitment to modernisation and efficiency in securing our borders. Integrating advanced technology into border management is a step in the right direction and aligns perfectly with our broader national security objectives.

“We are confident that these innovations will enhance border control operations while ensuring that legitimate trade is not hindered,” the NSA remarked.

The meeting also underscored the significance of inter-agency collaboration in addressing security threats and maintaining national stability.

In this regard, the NSA assured CGC Adeniyi of continued support for the NCS’s modernisation agenda, emphasising the need for enhanced synergy in intelligence sharing and operational coordination.

As Nigeria continues to confront evolving security challenges, the Customs Service’s adoption of technology stands as a pivotal strategy in fortifying border security, ensuring effective enforcement, and facilitating lawful trade within the region.
