Nigeria Customs Refutes False Report on Comptroller-General’s Tenure Extension

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has strongly dismissed a fake report circulating in the public domain, alleging that the Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, MFR, has received a tenure extension.

The Service has clarified that no such directive has been issued by the appropriate authorities.

In a statement released on Tuesday, the NCS described the report, purportedly originating from the State House, as misleading and entirely inaccurate.

The Service reaffirmed that the appointment and tenure of the Comptroller-General are exclusively determined by the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, in accordance with the Nigeria Customs Service Act 2023 and other governing regulations.

“For the avoidance of doubt, appointments and tenure extensions for the position of Comptroller-General of Customs are made solely at the discretion of the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, in line with the provisions of the Nigeria Customs Service Act 2023 and other relevant regulations governing public service appointments. As of this moment, no such directive has been communicated to the NCS by the appropriate authorities,” the statement read.

Reiterating its commitment to its core responsibilities of trade facilitation, revenue generation, and border security, the NCS stated that under the leadership of CGC Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, it remains focused on implementing significant reforms.

These include modernising customs operations, strengthening inter-agency cooperation, and fostering economic growth.

The Service also cautioned members of the public and stakeholders to disregard unverified reports and rely only on official communication channels for authentic updates regarding the NCS.

“The Service appreciates the continued support of stakeholders and remains committed to transparency, professionalism, and service to the nation,” the statement concluded.

The clarification was issued by Assistant Comptroller of Customs and National Public Relations Officer, Abdullahi Maiwada, on behalf of the Comptroller-General of Customs.
