The Apapa Area Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has surpassed the N1 trillion revenue collection mark well ahead of the mid-year point, achieving an impressive N1,002,968,178,694.07.

This milestone, reached more than 45 days before the end of the first half of the year, sets a new benchmark in the history of the Service.

Comptroller Babatunde Olomu, fsi, the Customs Area Controller, announced the landmark achievement, attributing the success to strategic leadership under the Comptroller General of Customs (CGC), Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, MFR.

He also credited the Command’s efforts in blocking revenue leakages and the steadfast dedication of officers and men in carrying out their duties with diligence and integrity.

Dr Olomu described the early attainment of the N1 trillion threshold, less than halfway through the fifth month, as a clear indicator that the Command is on course to surpass its 2024 total revenue haul of N2.3 trillion by December.

“We have shown readiness not just to maintain last year’s performance, but to exceed it. This achievement speaks volumes of the resilience and commitment of our officers since I took over as Controller in May 2024,” said Olomu.

He lauded his team for maintaining the momentum of excellence and urged them to redouble efforts towards maximising revenue collection, intensifying the suppression of smuggling through meticulous cargo examination, and further facilitating legitimate trade.

Comptroller Olomu also emphasised the need for sustained intelligence sharing, strong cooperation with sister agencies, and frequent engagement with stakeholders.

He noted that these collaborative strategies were essential for maintaining operational efficiency and enhancing the Command’s contribution to national economic growth.

Highlighting the transformative policy direction of the CGC, Olomu underscored the benefits of the Unified Customs Management System, known as B’Odogwu, which he said has already demonstrated significant promise in boosting the Command’s productivity.

With the ongoing training of licensed customs agents and freight forwarders in preparation for the full deployment of the new system, Olomu expressed confidence in the Command’s ability to exceed 2024’s revenue and meet 2025’s target.

“Our award-winning reputation remains unshaken as we continue to build on our legacy as the leading customs command operating in Nigeria’s premier port. This recent milestone shows that we are far from complacent. Inspired by the example of the CGC, we are determined to keep pushing boundaries,” he stated.

Comptroller Olomu also acknowledged the support of compliant stakeholders in the port community, noting their role in facilitating lawful trade. However, he issued a stern warning to individuals or groups engaging in activities that threaten national economic objectives or security.

“Any unlawful behaviour that seeks to undermine the nation’s economic drive or compromise security will be met with the full force of the law,” he cautioned.

The Apapa Command has continued to receive national recognition for its outstanding performance.

In 2024, it was honoured with the CGC Award of Excellence for revenue collection, while Comptroller Olomu was named ‘Best Controller of the Year’ for his exemplary leadership and for strengthening the Command’s ability to fulfil its mandate.

The Command remains a critical revenue hub for the Federal Government, and with its latest feat, it further cements its reputation as a model of customs administration and efficiency in Nigeria.
