NiMet, CERT-ABU Form Strategic Partnership to Advance Environmental Monitoring, Climate Resilience

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) and the Centre for Energy Research and Training (CERT) of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, have formalised a strategic alliance through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), a landmark move aimed at deepening scientific collaboration and strengthening environmental monitoring across the country.
The signing ceremony, which brought together key officials from both institutions, was led by the Vice-Chancellor of Ahmadu Bello University, Professor Adamu Ahmed, and the Director General/Chief Executive Officer of NiMet, Professor Charles Anosike.
Professor Anosike, in his remarks, underscored the central role of science and innovation in shaping national development and enhancing resilience in the face of growing climate-related challenges. He stated:
“Our collaboration with CERT-ABU will support joint research in climate science, enhance radiological monitoring—including in aviation—and foster climate-smart agricultural practices. Together, we are leveraging science to improve livelihoods and build national resilience.”
Highlighting the broader scope of the partnership, Prof. Anosike noted that meteorological data remains indispensable to environmental safety, agricultural productivity, and disaster preparedness.
He further revealed plans for joint initiatives such as soil mapping, the downscaling of Seasonal Climate Prediction (SCP), and capacity building across key socio-economic sectors.
On his part, the Vice-Chancellor of ABU, Professor Adamu Ahmed, commended NiMet’s longstanding contributions to the agricultural sector, particularly through the provision of timely and accurate weather and climate information that have supported farmers and enhanced food production.
Prof. Ahmed expressed optimism about the outcomes of the new partnership, saying:
“Through this partnership with NiMet, we look forward to joint activities in radioactive materials mapping, technical training, and the development of tools and strategies to enhance environmental monitoring, food security, and public safety.”
The alliance between NiMet and CERT-ABU is expected to significantly boost national efforts in sustainable development by combining expertise in meteorology, radiological research, energy studies, and environmental safety.
The agreement marks a crucial step in fostering innovation-led solutions for climate adaptation and public health in Nigeria.
