The Tincan Island Port Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), in a bid to strengthen youth empowerment and foster grassroots sports development, has partnered with the Nigerian Professional Wrestling Federation (NPWF) to promote the forthcoming African International Wrestling Championship.

The leadership of the NPWF, led by its National President, Chief John Uche, paid a courtesy visit to the Customs Area Controller, Comptroller Frank Onyeka, at the Command Headquarters in Lagos on Tuesday, 7 October 2025.

During the visit, Chief Uche officially informed the Command of the Federation’s upcoming international tournament scheduled to take place from 18 to 19 October 2025 at Dr. Alex Ekwueme Square, Awka, Anambra State.

According to him, the championship will feature wrestling legends and emerging talents from Nigeria, the United States, the United Kingdom, France, and several African countries.

He described the event as a strategic platform for showcasing Nigeria’s untapped wrestling potential and nurturing future champions.

Chief Uche further explained that the Federation’s broader mission extends beyond sports entertainment. It aims to engage Nigerian youths productively, reduce unemployment, and curb restiveness through structured sporting and skill development initiatives.

“Our goal is not just to host an international tournament but to build opportunities for over a hundred Nigerian youths through training, exposure, and community engagement,” he stated.

Responding, Comptroller Frank Onyeka lauded the Federation’s efforts in promoting indigenous sporting activities and its recognition of the Nigeria Customs Service as a worthy partner.

He reaffirmed the Service’s continuous support for initiatives that align with national development goals, particularly in empowering the youth and promoting sports.

“The Nigeria Customs Service, under the leadership of the Comptroller-General, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, remains committed to supporting youth-focused programmes and grassroots sports that unite communities and foster positive engagement,” Onyeka said.

He added that the Service has over the years maintained a tradition of backing diverse sporting ventures across the country as part of its corporate social responsibility.

The highlight of the event was the official unveiling and presentation of the championship trophy to Comptroller Onyeka by the NPWF delegation.

The Federation also honoured him with an award of excellence, symbolising a shared commitment to the success of the upcoming championship and the promotion of sports development in Nigeria.
