In a significant move aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s aviation and meteorological capacity, the Director General and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency, Prof. Charles Anosike, and the Rector of the Nigerian College of Aviation Technology, Dr. Danjuma Ismaila, have formalised a strategic partnership through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding in Abuja.

The agreement marks a renewed commitment by both institutions to deepen collaboration in professional training, capacity development, and improved service delivery across Nigeria’s aviation and meteorological sectors.

Industry observers describe the partnership as a timely intervention designed to align technical expertise with global standards in aviation safety, weather forecasting, and operational efficiency.

Under the terms of the MoU, both organisations will jointly utilise training facilities, provide advisory support for aviation-related programmes, and develop specialised long- and short-term courses tailored for agency personnel. The arrangement also establishes staff exchange initiatives and joint training exercises to promote knowledge transfer and institutional synergy.

A key feature of the partnership is the provision for the use of NiMet’s Training School located in Oshodi for aviation training that complies with standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organization. This component is expected to expand access to internationally recognised certification and strengthen Nigeria’s aviation workforce.

The collaborative framework targets several critical professional areas, including aviation operations and management, safety management systems, crisis response planning, aviation security, air navigation systems, and airport operations.

Both institutions also plan to co-organise specialised academic programmes, notably diploma courses in Aviation Meteorology, aimed at developing technical professionals capable of supporting modern air transport systems.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Prof. Anosike reaffirmed NiMet’s dedication to sustained human capital development, stressing that continuous investment in training, technical partnerships, and institutional cooperation remains essential for achieving operational excellence. He noted that such initiatives are vital for ensuring safe, efficient, and reliable air navigation services across Nigeria’s airspace.

The collaboration signals a strategic step toward harmonising meteorological intelligence with aviation training, a combination widely regarded as crucial for flight safety, route optimisation, and effective crisis management within the sector.
