Air Peace Rebuts Claims of Passenger Neglect After Gatwick–Lagos Disruption, Cites Bird Strike, Operational Constraints

Nigeria’s foremost airline, Air Peace Limited, has strongly refuted allegations circulating on social media that passengers on its London Gatwick–Lagos flight were abandoned without care or communication, insisting that the disruption was handled with due diligence, transparency, and strict adherence to safety protocols.

In a comprehensive statement issued on May 1, 2026, the airline clarified that the affected service was forced to suspend operations following a bird strike – an unpredictable aviation hazard widely classified as a force majeure event.

The incident, it explained, necessitated the immediate grounding of the aircraft to allow for extensive safety checks in line with global aviation regulations.

Air Peace emphasised that the decision to halt the flight was taken purely in the interest of passenger safety. “At no time would we compromise safety by operating an aircraft that has not been fully certified fit for flight,” the airline stated, reiterating its unwavering commitment to international safety standards.

Addressing claims that passengers were left stranded, the airline maintained that communication lines remained open throughout the incident.

Passengers, it said, were promptly briefed on the situation and informed of the cancellation, while efforts were simultaneously made to ensure their comfort and welfare.

As part of these arrangements, the airline confirmed that affected travellers were offered accommodation at the Hilton London Gatwick, alongside necessary transit support.

Many passengers, it noted, have since been successfully accommodated, while logistical preparations are ongoing to deploy a replacement aircraft for the continuation of the journey to Lagos.

However, Air Peace acknowledged that the response process encountered additional challenges beyond its immediate control.

Chief among these were delays linked to airport congestion and ground handling operations, particularly in relation to the retrieval of checked baggage. These bottlenecks, the airline explained, slowed the movement of some passengers from the airport to their hotel accommodation.

Providing further context, the airline noted that baggage handling services at international airports are managed by independent ground handling companies operating under strict regulatory frameworks.

Consequently, it stressed that airlines do not have direct authority over such processes, which must follow established operational procedures.

Despite these constraints, Air Peace insisted that no passenger was abandoned at any point during the disruption.

It highlighted the role of the flight captain in delivering timely announcements, as well as the airline’s efforts to provide continuous updates and support throughout the ordeal.

The airline expressed sympathy for the inconvenience experienced by passengers, acknowledging that disruptions of this nature can be unsettling.

Nevertheless, it urged the public to recognise that aviation is a highly regulated and complex industry, where safety considerations take precedence over schedule adherence – particularly in force majeure scenarios such as bird strikes.

Air Peace also took issue with what it described as an excessive wave of criticism, arguing that the negative portrayal of the incident failed to reflect the realities of the situation and the measures taken to safeguard passengers.

Reaffirming its dedication to customer satisfaction, the airline pledged to review its response mechanisms and strengthen service delivery during unforeseen disruptions, while maintaining its core priority of passenger safety.

The statement concluded with an expression of appreciation to passengers and the flying public for their patience and understanding during the incident.
