Nigeria Launches 2026 Hajj Operations with Smooth Inaugural Flight from Lagos
Nigeria has officially flagged off its 2026 Hajj airlift operations, with the first batch of pilgrims successfully departing Lagos in the early hours of Monday, May 4, 2026, signalling the commencement of this year’s pilgrimage to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
The inaugural flight took off from the Pilgrims and Cargo Terminal of Murtala Muhammed International Airport at approximately 1:41 a.m., conveying 315 intending pilgrims from Oyo State.
The operation, handled by Air Peace, was widely described by officials as seamless, orderly, and devoid of operational hitches.
Industry stakeholders and government officials present at the airport attributed the successful take-off to meticulous planning and robust inter-agency collaboration.
Aviation authorities, security operatives, and Hajj administrators were said to have worked in close synergy to ensure a smooth departure process, from passenger screening to boarding and final clearance.
The nationwide Hajj airlift is being coordinated by the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria in conjunction with state Muslim pilgrims’ welfare boards and approved air carriers.
Over the coming weeks, a series of outbound flights will transport thousands of Nigerian pilgrims to Islam’s holiest destinations – Makkah and Madinah.
Hajj remains a central obligation in Islam, representing one of its five pillars. The pilgrimage involves deeply symbolic rites such as Tawaf, the ritual circumambulation of the Kaaba; Sa’i, which commemorates the search for water by Hagar; and the stoning of the devil at Mina.

The observance reaches its spiritual height during the Day of Arafat, when pilgrims gather in prayer and reflection on the plains of Arafat.
Officials disclosed that this year’s operations have been strengthened with improved logistics planning, enhanced passenger facilitation systems, and stricter adherence to health and safety protocols.
These measures are aimed at ensuring not only efficiency but also the wellbeing of all pilgrims throughout the journey.
Prospective pilgrims have been advised to strictly adhere to travel requirements, including the completion of all necessary documentation and compliance with baggage regulations.
Authorities stressed that such cooperation is critical to maintaining the smooth flow of operations across all departure points.
The hitch-free departure of the inaugural flight from Lagos is widely seen as a strong indicator of Nigeria’s readiness for the 2026 Hajj.
It also underscores the determination of all stakeholders to deliver a well-coordinated, safe, and spiritually enriching pilgrimage experience for thousands of faithful embarking on this sacred journey.
