Maritime Industry Leaders Unveil ₦1.8 Million Awards Scheme for Outstanding Graduating Students

Leading figures and organisations in Nigeria’s maritime industry have announced a ₦1.8 million sponsorship package for the Best Graduating Maritime Students Awards, in a move aimed at promoting academic excellence and encouraging the development of future professionals in the sector.

The initiative, which has attracted support from some of the industry’s most respected stakeholders, is designed to recognise exceptional academic performance across various maritime disciplines while providing financial support to outstanding graduates as they begin their careers.

Under the scheme, each award category carries a cash prize of ₦200,000, with beneficiaries also having the opportunity to win multiple awards and receive the cumulative value of their prizes.

The Association of Marine Engineers and Surveyors (AMES) is among the key sponsors and will fund the award for the Best Graduating Student in Marine Engineering.

The association’s participation is seen as a demonstration of its commitment to strengthening technical capacity and upholding professional standards within the maritime sector.

In the area of Maritime Law, renowned maritime stakeholder Chief Osuala E. Nwagbara has pledged support for the best graduating student, underscoring the importance of legal expertise and regulatory compliance in the industry.

Mrs Eunice Ezeoke will sponsor the award for the Best Graduating Student in Maritime Transportation and Business Studies, reflecting her longstanding interest in educational advancement and human capital development within the maritime community.

Similarly, Alhaji Aminu Umar has committed to rewarding the Best Graduating Student in Shipping Management, a discipline widely regarded as essential to the efficient administration and expansion of maritime trade and logistics.

The award for the Best Graduating Student in Nautical Science will be sponsored by Capt. Segun Enitan Akanbi. The category is considered one of the most prestigious in maritime education and is expected to honour future navigators and shipmasters who will contribute to the nation’s maritime economy.

Recognising the increasing significance of safety and protection in maritime operations, Capt. Elei Green has undertaken sponsorship of the Best Graduating Student in Maritime Security, a field that has continued to gain prominence globally amid evolving security challenges.

The fisheries segment of the blue economy will also receive attention, with Dr Anthony Joshua sponsoring the award for the Best Graduating Student in Fisheries Technology.

Industry stakeholders believe the gesture highlights the strategic importance of fisheries to Nigeria’s economic diversification agenda.

In a bid to promote gender inclusion and encourage greater female participation in maritime professions, Bola Muse and Mrs Eunice Ezeoke will jointly sponsor the Best Graduating Female Maritime Student Award. The category is expected to inspire more women to pursue careers in a sector traditionally dominated by men.

Perhaps the most prestigious honour under the programme is the Overall Best Graduating Maritime Student Award, which will be sponsored by Capt. Sunday Umoren.

The category is reserved for the most exceptional student across all maritime disciplines and is expected to be one of the highlights of the award ceremony.

According to the organisers, the awards have been carefully structured to foster healthy competition among students while encouraging excellence in specialised fields considered vital to Nigeria’s economic growth and the advancement of the maritime sector.

They noted that the scheme offers an added incentive, as students who emerge successful in more than one category will receive the combined cash value of all awards won.

Consequently, a graduate who wins two categories will take home ₦400,000, while those securing additional categories will receive even higher sums.

Industry observers have described the initiative as a significant investment in maritime education and human capital development.

They noted that beyond the financial rewards, the awards represent the industry’s commitment to merit, innovation and the grooming of a new generation of professionals capable of driving Nigeria’s maritime sector to greater heights.

The awards programme is expected to further strengthen collaboration between academia and industry while reinforcing efforts to build a highly skilled workforce to support the country’s growing blue economy aspirations.
