The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has taken another step towards strengthening climate resilience and innovation by initiating a strategic collaboration with Cosmopolitan University to advance climate-smart solutions through artificial intelligence (AI), satellite technology and scientific research.

The partnership, which is expected to be formalised through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), will focus on climate-smart and digital agriculture, aviation research, staff exchange, data analytics and the application of AI to improve livelihoods and support sustainable development.

The Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of NiMet, Professor Charles Anosike, disclosed this on Monday, 6 July, when he received the Vice-Chancellor of Cosmopolitan University, Professor Carl Adams, and members of the institution’s leadership on a courtesy visit to the agency.

Speaking during the meeting, Professor Anosike highlighted the shared vision between NiMet and Cosmopolitan University, noting that both institutions are committed to translating scientific research into practical solutions that benefit society.

He explained that, as a public institution, NiMet has continued to generate research and scientific information aimed at addressing climate challenges, improving weather services and supporting socio-economic development across Nigeria.

According to him, the agency has recorded significant milestones in producing research documents and climate-related information that serve as valuable resources for government, businesses, farmers, the aviation industry and the general public.

Professor Anosike commended Cosmopolitan University for embracing emerging technologies, particularly artificial intelligence, to develop climate-ready and climate-resilient communities.

He observed that innovative technologies such as AI are increasingly becoming essential tools in addressing the impacts of climate change, enhancing weather prediction, supporting disaster risk reduction and improving decision-making across various sectors.

The NiMet boss stressed that stronger collaboration between research institutions and government agencies would accelerate innovation and ensure that scientific discoveries are translated into practical solutions capable of improving lives and strengthening national resilience.

In his remarks, the Vice-Chancellor of Cosmopolitan University, Professor Carl Adams, reaffirmed the university’s commitment to developing the next generation of indigenous artificial intelligence scientists and innovators capable of addressing Nigeria’s climate challenges.

He said the institution is investing in climate-smart innovations powered by satellite data, AI applications and cutting-edge research to support sustainable development and build resilient communities.

Professor Adams noted that collaboration with NiMet would provide an opportunity to combine scientific expertise, technological innovation and meteorological data to produce impactful research and practical solutions for national development.

Both institutions agreed to formalise their partnership through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding that will establish a framework for long-term collaboration.

Under the proposed agreement, the partnership will adopt a multidisciplinary approach to promoting climate-smart and digital agriculture, particularly for smallholder farmers, while also advancing aviation research, staff exchange programmes, data analytics, artificial intelligence applications and the effective utilisation of meteorological information.

The collaboration is also expected to strengthen research capacity, encourage knowledge sharing and foster innovation in climate services that will enhance agricultural productivity, improve aviation safety and contribute to better livelihoods for Nigerians.

The Vice-Chancellor was accompanied on the visit by the Pro-Chancellor of Cosmopolitan University and other members of the university’s senior management team, who joined discussions on areas of mutual interest and future collaboration.

The proposed NiMet–Cosmopolitan University partnership underscores the growing importance of collaboration between academia and public institutions in harnessing science, technology and innovation to address climate change, support food security and drive sustainable economic development in Nigeria.
