MMA2 Wins Lagos Fire Safety Award for Outstanding Fire Prevention Standards
Bi-Courtney Aviation Services Limited (BASL), operator of the Murtala Muhammed Airport Terminal Two (MMA2), has been recognised for its commitment to safety after receiving the “Most Fire-Free Public Facility” award at the Lagos International Fire Safety Conference 3.0.
The award, presented by the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, recognises public facilities that have demonstrated exceptional standards in fire safety management, risk prevention and the implementation of effective emergency response systems.
The recognition highlights MMA2’s sustained efforts in maintaining a safe operating environment through proactive fire prevention measures, emergency preparedness and strict adherence to aviation safety standards.
Operated by BASL, MMA2 has established itself as one of Nigeria’s leading airport terminals with a strong emphasis on operational discipline, structured safety procedures and compliance with industry regulations.
The terminal serves thousands of passengers daily while providing services to airlines, concessionaires and other airport users.
According to BASL, the terminal is equipped with modern fire detection and suppression systems, highly trained emergency response personnel and comprehensive safety protocols designed to prevent fire incidents and ensure rapid intervention whenever emergencies arise.
The company said it has continued to invest significantly in safety infrastructure through routine maintenance of fire protection systems, regular safety audits, emergency simulation exercises and continuous training programmes aimed at strengthening staff capacity.
These measures, BASL noted, have helped position MMA2 as one of the country’s safest public facilities and a benchmark for fire safety management and emergency preparedness within Nigeria’s aviation industry.
Reacting to the recognition, the Acting Chief Operating Officer and Head of Space and Premises Management at BASL, Mr Kola Bamigboye, described the award as a validation of the company’s long-standing investment in safety and operational excellence.
He said the honour reflected BASL’s unwavering commitment to maintaining the highest standards of safety across all aspects of its operations, stressing that safety remains central to every operational decision taken at the terminal.
According to Bamigboye, the company has consistently invested in modern fire prevention technology, facility maintenance, employee development and emergency preparedness to ensure passengers and all terminal users enjoy a safe and secure environment.
He thanked the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service for recognising the company’s efforts, adding that BASL would continue to improve its safety standards and operational performance.
Also commenting on the award, BASL’s Head of Aviation Safety, Mrs Nafisat Adeniran, said the recognition underscored the effectiveness of the company’s proactive safety management system and continuous improvement initiatives.
She explained that the achievement reflected not only the commitment of the Aviation Safety Department but also the collective efforts of every department within the organisation to prevent incidents before they occur.
Adeniran noted that BASL’s safety strategy is built on continuous vigilance, regulatory compliance, regular training, comprehensive risk assessments and emergency drills, alongside fostering a workplace culture where every employee understands their responsibility towards safety.
She added that the award would further strengthen the company’s determination to enhance its safety management systems, adopt global best practices and ensure MMA2 remains one of Nigeria’s safest and most resilient airport terminals.
BASL reaffirmed that safety remains the cornerstone of its operations, describing the latest recognition as both an honour and a responsibility to continue setting high standards in safety, operational excellence and innovation across Nigeria’s aviation sector.
The company also dedicated the award to its employees, airline partners, concessionaires, regulatory agencies and other stakeholders whose contributions have helped sustain the terminal’s strong safety record.
MMA2, Nigeria’s first major airport terminal developed under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) arrangement, has continued to position itself as a world-class facility by focusing on innovation, customer service, operational efficiency and uncompromising safety standards.
