SAHCO Rolls Out EVAC+CHAIR Pilot Programme to Enhance Accessibility for Passengers with Reduced Mobility
Skyway Aviation Handling Company (SAHCO) Plc has introduced a pilot programme designed to improve the travel experience of passengers with reduced mobility following the acquisition of the EVAC+CHAIR emergency evacuation system, becoming the first aviation ground handling company in Nigeria to deploy the specialised equipment.
The company said the initiative forms part of its broader strategy to promote inclusive air travel, strengthen passenger safety and align its operations with international best practices in ground handling services.
The EVAC+CHAIR is a globally recognised emergency mobility device developed specifically for the safe evacuation and movement of passengers with reduced mobility.
Since its introduction in 1982, it has become widely used in airports, hospitals and public facilities around the world for transporting individuals safely on stairways during emergencies or in locations where lifts are unavailable.
SAHCO explained that the chair operates through an advanced gravity and friction control mechanism, enabling trained personnel to move passengers safely up and down staircases without the physical demands associated with manual lifting.
The equipment is fitted with secure safety harnesses, heavy-duty rubber track systems and an ergonomic frame that allows operators to assist passengers comfortably during boarding, disembarkation and emergency evacuation procedures while ensuring their dignity and safety are maintained throughout the process.
The ground handling company noted that the acquisition reflects its commitment to ensuring that no passenger is disadvantaged because of physical limitations, stressing that accessible aviation services are becoming an increasingly important component of modern airport operations.
Speaking on behalf of the Chairman of SAHCO, Dr Taiwo Afolabi, CON, the company’s Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Mrs Adenike Aboderin, described the investment as another milestone in the company’s drive to provide world-class ground handling services.

The company recalled that its investment in innovation was not new. In 2025, it became the first and only aviation ground handling company in the country to procure the Rapiscan Itemiser 5X, one of the latest Explosive Trace Detection (ETD) systems recommended by the United States Transportation Security Administration (TSA).
The Itemiser 5X significantly improved security screening capabilities by enabling the detection of a wide range of explosive substances and narcotics, strengthening aviation security operations at airports where the company operates.
