FAA Proposes Inspections for More Than 1,000 Boeing 737 MAX Aircraft Over Seat Installation Safety Concern

The United States Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has proposed mandatory inspections of more than 1,000 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft worldwide following concerns that passenger seats may have been improperly installed, creating a potential safety risk during turbulence or emergency landings.

The proposed directive affects Boeing 737 MAX 8, MAX 9 and MAX 8200 aircraft and would require airlines operating the affected jets to carry out detailed inspections of seat track fittings and undertake repairs where necessary.

According to the FAA, improperly installed seats could disengage from their seat tracks if subjected to increased loads during severe turbulence or an emergency landing. Such a failure could injure passengers or cabin crew and obstruct aircraft aisles, potentially hampering emergency evacuations.

According to a report by The Seattle Times, a FAA spokesperson said the agency has proposed issuing an Airworthiness Directive (AD), a legally enforceable regulation that would compel US airlines to inspect the affected aircraft within three years of the directive taking effect.

The proposed directive is expected to cover approximately 453 US-registered aircraft and about 1,028 aircraft globally.

While the FAA’s regulatory authority extends only to aircraft registered in the United States, aviation authorities in many other countries often adopt or mirror FAA safety directives for aircraft operating within their jurisdictions.

Boeing acknowledged the issue, stating that it had already alerted airline operators through guidance issued in December 2025.

A spokesperson for the aircraft manufacturer said the company supports the FAA’s decision to make the guidance mandatory, adding that Boeing now inspects seat installations before new aircraft leave its production facilities to ensure they comply with required standards.

The latest development comes as Boeing continues efforts to strengthen its safety and quality management systems following a series of high-profile manufacturing and safety concerns in recent years.

Since taking office as President and Chief Executive Officer, Kelly Ortberg has overseen the implementation of a comprehensive safety improvement programme aimed at addressing production deficiencies and rebuilding confidence in the company’s manufacturing processes.

The safety overhaul followed intense regulatory scrutiny after a door plug panel detached from an Alaska Airlines Boeing 737 MAX 9 shortly after take-off in January 2024, leaving a large opening in the aircraft’s fuselage.

Although no fatalities occurred in the incident, it prompted widespread investigations into Boeing’s production quality and oversight.

The manufacturer had already been grappling with reputational and financial challenges stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic as well as the two fatal Boeing 737 MAX crashes in 2018 and 2019, which resulted in the worldwide grounding of the aircraft type for nearly two years.

In response to heightened regulatory oversight, Boeing has introduced several measures designed to improve manufacturing quality and safety performance.

These include increasing unannounced factory audits, strengthening internal employee safety reporting systems, reducing unfinished production work transferred between assembly stations, and expanding specialised training for personnel involved in aircraft assembly.

The FAA’s latest proposal represents another step in ongoing efforts by regulators to ensure Boeing aircraft meet the highest safety standards before entering or remaining in commercial service.

If adopted, airlines operating the affected aircraft will be required to complete inspections and any necessary corrective actions within the stipulated compliance period to minimise potential risks to passengers and crew.
