NiMet Secures ISO 9001:2015 Certification for Aeronautical Weather Services at Three Airports

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has secured ISO 9001:2015 certification for the provision of aeronautical meteorological services at Yola, Osubi and Owerri airports, strengthening the agency’s compliance with international quality and safety standards.

The certification followed a rigorous third-party audit conducted by Certech Inc., Canada, between July 20 and 23, 2026, to assess the quality of NiMet’s aeronautical meteorological products and services provided to airlines and other aviation stakeholders at the three airports.

The development is in line with the directive of the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, SAN, to NiMet’s Director-General and Chief Executive Officer, Professor Charles Anosike, to ensure strict compliance with safety regulations and sustain improvements in Nigeria’s ratings by the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) and the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO).

According to NiMet, the audit found its services at the three airports to be in conformity with the requirements of the ISO 9001:2015 quality management standard.

The latest certification is particularly significant because it represents the first time NiMet’s aeronautical meteorological products and services at Yola, Osubi and Owerri airports have undergone the ISO 9001:2015 certification audit.

NiMet said it had also successfully undergone recertification at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos; Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport, Kano; Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja; Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu; and Port Harcourt International Airport, Omagwa.

With the latest development, NiMet’s ISO 9001:2015 certification now covers aeronautical meteorological services at eight Nigerian international airports, including Yola Modibbo Adama International Airport and Sam Mbakwe International Airport, Owerri.

The certification is valid for three years, with annual surveillance and maintenance audits scheduled throughout the period. The next recertification exercise is expected in 2029.

In a letter to Anosike dated July 26, 2026, and titled ‘ISO 9001:2015’, Certech’s Lead Auditor and Director, Frank Strohmeier, said the objectives of the surveillance audit had been achieved.

“The audit objectives for the surveillance audit were achieved. A systematic process audit was performed with emphasis on risks and objectives per ISO 9001:2015,” Strohmeier said.

Following the audit, Certech issued a revised certificate confirming that NiMet’s quality management system conforms to the ISO 9001:2015 requirements for the provision of meteorological services to the aviation industry.

The certification is expected to reinforce the reliability and consistency of weather information supplied to airlines and aviation operators, particularly because accurate meteorological information is critical to flight planning, aircraft operations, airport management and aviation safety.

Reacting to the achievement, Anosike expressed satisfaction with the work of the agency’s Quality Management System team, led by Rotimi Adenubi.

“We are excited about this. Our Quality Management System (QMS) team led by Rotimi Adenubi have been working round the clock to achieve this feat,” he said.

The NiMet chief executive, however, stressed that the certification would not mark the end of the agency’s quality improvement efforts.

“We are not stopping here as management is focused on overall improvement of standards at all our operational locations,” Anosike added.

The achievement comes as Nigeria continues efforts to strengthen its aviation safety oversight and align its meteorological services with international standards.

Aeronautical meteorological services form a key component of the aviation safety chain, providing pilots, airlines, air traffic managers and airport operators with information on weather conditions that can affect flight operations.

NiMet’s expanding ISO 9001:2015 coverage therefore represents a further step towards standardising the quality of meteorological services across the country’s airports and improving the consistency of weather information available to aviation stakeholders.
