NiMet Earns AfriGEO Recognition for Weather, Climate Resilience Efforts

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has been recognised with the AfriGEO Weather, Climate and Early Warning Services Award for its contributions to the provision of weather and climate information, early warning services and efforts to strengthen climate resilience through Earth observation.

The award was presented to NiMet’s Director-General/Chief Executive Officer, Prof. Charles Anosike, by the Director-General of the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA), Prof. Matthew Olumide Adepoju, at the 10th AfriGEO Gala Dinner held in Abuja on Wednesday, 7 October 2026.

The presentation formed part of activities marking the 10th AfriGEO Symposium, a major continental gathering focused on the application of Earth observation, geospatial information and environmental intelligence to address development and environmental challenges in Africa.

The 2026 symposium was held under the theme, “Earth Observations for a Resilient Africa,” and brought together policymakers, scientists, development partners, private-sector stakeholders and practitioners from AfriGEO’s 33 African member states.

The recognition places emphasis on the role of meteorological and Earth observation services in providing information needed to anticipate and respond to weather and climate-related risks.

For Nigeria, such services are increasingly important in supporting early warning systems, disaster risk reduction, agricultural planning, infrastructure development and other decisions affected by changing weather and climate conditions.

NiMet has continued to provide weather and climate information to various sectors of the Nigerian economy, with the agency also playing a role in strengthening the country’s capacity to anticipate hazardous weather and climate events.

The agency said its commitment extends to advancing the use of weather, climate and Earth observation information to improve early warning and support evidence-based decision-making.

According to NiMet, the continued integration of Earth observation technologies with meteorological and climate services will help provide timely and actionable information for government institutions, businesses, communities and other stakeholders.

The agency said it would continue to pursue innovation and strategic partnerships as part of efforts to support the Federal Government’s climate-resilience agenda.

It added that the objective was to contribute to a safer and better-informed Nigeria by ensuring that relevant weather and climate information reaches decision-makers and communities in a timely manner.

The AfriGEO recognition also highlights the growing importance of collaboration among African institutions in using Earth observation and environmental intelligence to address shared challenges, particularly those associated with climate variability, extreme weather and sustainable development.

Through platforms such as the AfriGEO Symposium, African countries and institutions are able to exchange knowledge, technologies and practices aimed at improving the continent’s capacity to monitor environmental changes and translate scientific information into practical action.

For NiMet, the award provides further recognition of its role in the wider African effort to strengthen weather, climate and early warning services and build resilience against the impacts of a changing climate.
