Delta rolls out new travel rewards as Nigerian flyers seek more value on US routes
Delta Air Lines has introduced a new travel rewards package for eligible new Delta SkyMiles American Express cardholders, offering two round-trip Delta Comfort Flight Certificates and 50,000 bonus SkyMiles as the airline and American Express mark 30 years of partnership.
The limited-time promotion, which runs from August 27 to November 4, 2026, is targeted at eligible new holders of the Delta SkyMiles Reserve American Express Consumer Card.
Under the offer, customers who enrol and spend $10,000 within their first six months will qualify for two round-trip Delta Comfort Flight Certificates, in addition to 50,000 bonus SkyMiles.
Delta said the certificates can be used for eligible round-trip travel on Delta-operated flights within the 48 contiguous United States, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands.
The airline said there are no blackout dates attached to the certificates, although customers are required to make bookings at least 21 days before travel. Taxes and fees of up to $80 per person may also apply.
The latest promotion comes at a time when airlines are increasingly using loyalty schemes, premium travel benefits and other incentives to differentiate their products and retain high-value passengers.
For Nigerian travellers, particularly those who frequently travel to the United States, the offer could provide additional value for passengers who combine international trips with domestic journeys within the US.
Delta maintains a nonstop Lagos-Atlanta service, connecting Nigerian passengers to its extensive US network through its Atlanta hub.
However, the airline’s latest promotion comes with an important limitation for Nigerian customers.
The two Comfort Flight Certificates offered under the promotion cannot be used for travel between Lagos and the United States. Instead, they are restricted to eligible Delta-operated round-trip flights within the 48 contiguous US states, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands.
This means that a Nigerian passenger could potentially use the certificates for a separate domestic journey within the United States after travelling from Lagos, provided the passenger meets the eligibility requirements and complies with the terms and conditions of the offer.
For instance, a Nigerian traveller flying into Atlanta could potentially use one of the certificates for a subsequent Delta round trip to another eligible US destination.
The benefit could therefore be particularly attractive to passengers whose US travel involves multiple destinations, including those travelling for business, visiting family members or combining business trips with leisure.
The promotion also highlights the growing importance of loyalty programmes in the competitive US-Nigeria aviation market, where passengers are increasingly looking beyond ticket prices when choosing airlines.
For frequent travellers, benefits such as bonus miles, upgraded travel experiences and complimentary or discounted domestic connections can influence airline preference, particularly for passengers who make several international trips each year.
Delta’s partnership with American Express, now entering its fourth decade, has become an important component of the airline’s loyalty strategy.
The latest offer forms part of a broader package of limited-time promotions being announced by the two companies to commemorate the 30-year relationship.
The 50,000 bonus SkyMiles could provide additional opportunities for eligible cardholders to accumulate rewards towards future Delta travel, while the Comfort Flight Certificates offer a more immediate benefit for qualifying domestic US journeys.
However, the $10,000 spending requirement within the first six months means that the promotion is likely to be most relevant to frequent travellers or customers whose normal spending patterns can comfortably meet the threshold.
