ACI Nominates Olubunmi Kuku as Africa’s Regional Advisor on World Governing Board

The Managing Director of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Mrs Olubunmi Kuku, has been nominated as the Regional Advisor for Africa on the Airports Council International (ACI) World Governing Board, a landmark achievement for Nigeria and the African aviation sector.

In a statement, the Authority said her nomination was ratified on 20th September 2024 during the ACI Africa General Assembly in South Africa, marking a significant milestone for the aviation industry across the continent.

According to the statement, this prestigious appointment highlights Mrs. Kuku’s expertise and leadership within the sector, as she becomes a key figure in shaping the future of airport operations and policy across Africa. 

In her new role, she will be instrumental in advocating for the needs and opportunities unique to African airports, helping to address critical challenges such as infrastructure development, safety regulations, and sustainable practices. 

As a Regional Advisor on the ACI World Governing Board, Mrs. Kuku will represent the African region on an international platform that oversees 2,100 airports and 814 members across 169 countries. 

Her appointment reflects the growing importance of African airports in the global aviation industry and the need for strategic development to enhance the region’s competitiveness on a global scale.

Her extensive background in infrastructure finance, coupled with her experience in the aviation sector, positions her as a valuable asset in driving the conversation on policies that will promote safety, efficiency, and sustainability in airport operations across Africa. 

Speaking on her appointment, Mrs. Kuku remarked, “I am deeply honoured to be elected as the Regional Advisor for Africa on the ACI World Governing Board. 

This role is not just a personal achievement; it is a collective victory for our nation and the African aviation sector. 

“Together, we can foster collaboration, innovation, and excellence, ensuring that our airports are not only safe and efficient but also drivers of economic growth and development.”

Mrs. Kuku’s leadership has also been recognised through awards presented to FAAN under her management. 

During the ACI Africa Conference in Johannesburg, both Port Harcourt International Airport and Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport received accolades for operational excellence and safety.

These awards reflect Mrs. Kuku’s vision and commitment to elevating the standards of Nigeria’s airports to meet international best practices.

Her election comes at a pivotal time as the global aviation industry navigates challenges such as economic recovery post-pandemic and the shift towards more sustainable aviation practices. 

Mrs. Kuku’s influence and advocacy will be crucial in pushing for investments in airport infrastructure across Africa, ensuring that the continent’s airports are prepared to meet future demands while supporting economic development.

Mrs Kuku was appointed Managing Director of FAAN in December 2023. She brings a wealth of experience from both the public and private sectors, including leadership positions at Big Four firms such as Ernst & Young and Deloitte Consulting. 

Her previous roles in the Nigerian aviation sector include serving as a technical advisor in the Federal Ministry of Aviation and as General Manager at the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency.

Recognised for her dedication to advancing the industry, Mrs. Kuku has held leadership roles on several boards and international organisations. 

Her expertise in infrastructure development and aviation management has consistently earned her acclaim.
