Africa: South Africa’s music sensation Tyla clinches Best African Music Performance at 2024 Grammy Awards
South African singer Tyla secured the coveted award for the Best African Music Performance at the 2024 Grammy Awards held on Sunday.
Despite stiff competition, none of the Nigerian quintets – Davido, Burna Boy, Asake and Ayra Starr – clinched victory in their respective categories.
Tyla, the accomplished female rapper, outshone renowned Nigerian artists David Adeleke (Davido), Ahmed Ololade (Asake), and Damini Ogulu (Burna Boy).
Her chart-topping track ‘Water’ emerged victorious, triumphing over notable contenders such as Davido’s ‘Unavailable,’ Asake’s ‘Amapiano,’ Burna Boy’s ‘City Boys,’ and Ayra Starr’s ‘Rush.’
The success of ‘Water’ transcended borders, making waves in the music scene by securing a spot in the top 10 charts across 16 countries, including the UK and the US.
The moment of triumph unfolded at the 66th Grammy Award Premiere Ceremony, a glittering event hosted at the Peacock Theatre in Los Angeles, where Tyla’s exceptional talent and musical prowess were celebrated on the global stage.
