AIB releases final reports on Chanchangi, three others
The Accident Investigation Bureau, Nigeria, has released the final reports on four ill-fated aircraft that crashed some years ago.
One of the reports is about the B737-200 with registration number 5N- BIG which was owned and operated by the defunct Chanchangi Airlines.
The aircraft was reported to have crashed at the Port Harcourt International Airport on the 14th July, 2008.
Releasing the reports today at its Office in Lagos, the AIB Commissioner, Engr. Akin Olateru said the Bureau was determined to delivering on its mandate in accident investigations in the aviation sector, and has deemed it necessary to release the final report on the Chanchangi aircraft even after 12 years.
He said the report has no safety recommendations because the airline is no longer in operation but reference is made to the Nigeria CAR 2009 and revision in 2015 for public consumption.
“There is no excuse to keep a report for seven (7) years or more. As we speak Chanchangi is gone and so if we released a safety recommendation it will be an open item, this is why there has to be speed in the release of accident reports,” he said.
Other reports released today include the Accident involving a Tampico TB-9 aircraft owned and operated by Nigerian College of Aviation Technology (NCAT), which occurred at Zaria Aerodrome, Kaduna State on 26th September, 2018; the Accident involving a Beechcraft C90 aircraft owned and operated by Shoreline Energy Intl Ltd, which occurred at Barakallahu Village near Old Kaduna (Military) Airport on 24th May, 2011; and the accident involving a Boeing 747-200 Aircraft operated by Veteran Avia Airlines which occurred at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport Abuja on 4th December, 2013.
Apart from the Chanchangi’s B737 report, other reports had safety recommendations issued to the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority.
