Akanu Ibiam Intl Airport Enugu Achieves ISO 9001:2015 Certification for Aeronautical Meteorological Services
The Akanu Ibiam International Airport Enugu has successfully obtained certification to the Nigerian Meteorological Agency’s (NiMet) quality management system ISO 9001:2015.
NiMet, in a statement, said this milestone was achieved following a directive from the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr. Festus Keyamo, emphasising strict compliance with safety regulations and the continuous improvement of Nigeria’s rating by the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) and the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO).
The certification process involved a rigorous third-party audit conducted by Certech Inc., Canada, from July 15th to 17th, 2024.
The audit evaluated NiMet’s products and services provided to airlines at the Enugu International Airport, confirming their adherence to the ISO 9001:2015 standards.
In a letter addressed to NiMet’s Director-General and Chief Executive Officer, Professor Charles Anosike, dated July 17, 2024, Lead Auditor and Director at Certech, Frank Strohmeier, affirmed that the audit objectives were achieved, emphasising the systematic process audit’s focus on risks and objectives per ISO 9001:2015.
This certification extends NiMet’s ISO 9001:2015 quality management system to five major Nigerian international airports: Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu; Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos; Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport, Kano; Port Harcourt International Airport, Omagwa; and Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.
NiMet’s successful recertification for these airports follows its initial certification in July 2023.
The agency said the ISO certification, valid for three years, includes an annual surveillance and maintenance audit until the next recertification due date in 2026.
Professor Charles Anosike expressed pride in this achievement, noting, “We are excited about this. Our Quality Management System (QMS) team, led by Usman Abdulrahman, have been working round the clock to achieve this feat. We are not stopping here as management is focused on overall improvement of standards at all our operational locations.”
Additionally, NiMet is working on extending the ISO 9001:2015 certification to seven more international airports: Maiduguri, Asaba, Owerri, Ibadan, Katsina, Yola, and Kaduna, further enhancing the quality of meteorological services in Nigeria’s aviation sector.
