AMSAY Conference Transforming Lives of Nigerian Maritime Students, Stakeholders Say

The Annual Maritime Students and Youth Conference (AMSAY Conference) has continued to gain recognition as one of Nigeria’s most impactful youth-focused maritime initiatives, with several beneficiaries recounting how the platform transformed their careers, restored hope, and opened doors to life-changing opportunities within the maritime industry.

Originally launched in 2016 under the name “A Day With Nigerian Maritime Students,” the conference has evolved into a major platform connecting maritime students, cadets, young professionals, industry leaders, and stakeholders across the country.

Organisers said the initiative was conceived to bridge the gap between classroom learning and industry realities while promoting academic excellence, mentorship, networking, and professional development among young maritime practitioners.

Over the years, participants and beneficiaries have continued to share testimonies of how the conference altered the trajectory of their careers at critical moments of uncertainty and frustration.

One of the most notable testimonies came from Engr. Oluwadamilola Adebamipe, a First Class Marine Engineering graduate under the Nigerian Seafarers Development Programme (NSDP), who revealed that prolonged unemployment after graduation nearly forced her to abandon her maritime ambitions despite her academic achievements and professional qualifications.

According to her, years of unsuccessful job applications left her discouraged until she attended the 2017 edition of the AMSAY Conference, where she openly narrated her struggles before maritime stakeholders and industry leaders.

Her emotional testimony reportedly attracted the attention of key figures in the maritime sector, who later facilitated an employment opportunity for her at the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA).

She currently serves as a Chief Engineer.
Another beneficiary, Adesakin Adekola, also described the conference as a turning point in his maritime journey after struggling to secure mandatory sea-time experience following his graduation from the Federal College of Fisheries and Marine Technology.

He explained that through interactions and exposure gained during the 2019 edition of the conference, he eventually secured sea-time placement, completed his Certificate of Competency, and rose to the rank of Second Officer. He is now preparing to obtain his Chiefmate certificate.

Beyond employment opportunities, several award recipients have described the conference as a source of motivation and inspiration that strengthened their commitment to academic and professional excellence.

Nnamdi Ezinwanne, one of the outstanding awardees at the 2018 conference, said the recognition received from Platforms Communications became a constant reminder that diligence and perseverance do not go unnoticed. According to her, the honour has continued to inspire her throughout difficult periods in her academic journey.

Similarly, Joyce Adoga, a graduate of Nautical Science from Delta State Maritime Polytechnic, Burutu, recounted how participation at the 2025 edition of the conference led to sponsorship support for her mandatory maritime certifications and professional training after years of financial hardship.

She disclosed that an interaction during one of the conference panel sessions resulted in a life-changing intervention from maritime lawyer, Dr. Emeka Akabogu, SAN, whose law firm eventually sponsored all her required professional training courses.

The sponsorship, she noted, gave her renewed confidence and an opportunity to continue pursuing her maritime career and sea-time aspirations.

Another beneficiary, Ogwo Jane, who emerged as the Overall Best Graduating Maritime Student in Nigeria for 2018, credited the conference with expanding her professional network and exposure within the industry.

She stated that the scholarship opportunities and recognition she received at the event contributed significantly to her academic advancement and eventual pursuit of a Master’s degree in Poland.

For Umahi Wilfred, winner of the Best Graduating Maritime Management Technology Student award in 2019, the conference also provided a pathway to professional growth.

According to him, attending the conference not only brought recognition but also secured him an internship opportunity with Starzs Investment Company Limited, one of Nigeria’s respected maritime firms.

Emmanuel Orolu, another participant, disclosed that his first attendance at the 2018 conference reignited his determination for academic excellence, a motivation he said later earned him national awards and scholarship opportunities for professional maritime training programmes valued at hundreds of thousands of naira.

Stakeholders within the maritime industry have continued to describe the AMSAY Conference as one of the few student-focused initiatives genuinely committed to bridging the disconnect between maritime institutions and industry practitioners.

Through technical sessions, mentorship engagements, paper presentations, speech competitions, networking opportunities, and award ceremonies, the conference has consistently created a platform for young maritime professionals to develop their skills and career prospects.

Speaking on the significance of the initiative, maritime enthusiast Sunday Bankole described the AMSAY Conference as “more than a conference,” noting that it has grown into a movement that inspires students, rewards excellence, and restores confidence in the future of Nigeria’s maritime industry.

As the conference continues to expand its reach and influence annually, many beneficiaries insist that beyond the plaques, applause, and certificates lies something far more meaningful – hope.

For numerous maritime students and young professionals facing unemployment, uncertainty, and career stagnation, AMSAY has increasingly become a symbol of possibility, proving that transformation, recognition, and opportunities remain attainable within Nigeria’s maritime sector.
