Bi-Courtney Joins Global Efforts Towards Environmental Sustainability on World Cleanup Day
Bi-Courtney Aviation Services Limited (BASL), operator of the Murtala Muhammed Airport Terminal 2 (MMA2), Lagos, Nigeria, proudly joined the global efforts for World Cleanup Day, a worldwide movement to tackle the mounting crisis of mismanaged waste.
The event, which took place on Friday, 20 September 2024, saw BASL rally its employees and volunteers to partake in clean-up activities around the airport terminal.
World Cleanup Day is an annual initiative aimed at activating five per cent of the global population to promote lasting behavioural change around waste management and environmental care.
In a statement signed by Ajoke Yinka-Olawuyi, Head of Corporate Communications, BASL, the company said as part of its activities, it organised a special awareness campaign directed at drivers who frequent the terminal, educating them on proper waste disposal practices.
According to the Head of Safety at BASL, Nafisat Adeniran, the initiative focused on the importance of ensuring that vehicles are equipped with waste baskets to promote proper waste collection and disposal.
“In our own little way of joining the activated five per cent of the world’s population, MMA2 organised awareness events to engage all MMA2 drivers.
“This is to educate them on how to manage waste within and outside the terminal. We also educated them on how to dispose of it correctly and to ensure that all their vehicles are equipped with baskets so that waste is properly collected and disposed of,” Adeniran remarked.
Demonstrating leadership by example, the senior management of BASL, alongside drivers and volunteers, took to the driver’s park to participate in the clean-up, gathering and disposing of litter in an effort to reinforce the organisation’s commitment to environmental stewardship.
Adeniran further highlighted that this event was part of BASL’s ongoing eco-friendly programmes, including their recycling initiatives and specialised management of Foreign Object Debris (FOD) waste on the airport apron.
“We continually reiterate our eco-friendly programme – The recycle waste. MMA2 is committed to environmental sustainability through its different initiatives, from the management of the specialised FOD waste on the airside to recycling of general waste on the landside.
“By taking part in World Cleanup Day, we join millions of volunteers worldwide to help tackle the global waste crisis and create a cleaner, more sustainable future for generations to come,” Adeniran added.
Ajoke Yinka-Olawuyi, Head of Corporate Communications at BASL, also reaffirmed the company’s environmental mission, stating, “We recognise that a clean and healthy environment is crucial not just for the aviation industry but for the entire ecosystem.
“At BASL, sustainability is embedded in our operational ethos, and World Cleanup Day offers us an opportunity to reaffirm our commitment to maintaining a greener planet.”
Beyond the annual clean-up event, BASL has implemented a range of eco-friendly practices aimed at reducing its environmental footprint.
These include the establishment of efficient waste management systems within the terminal, recycling programmes, and ongoing community outreach initiatives that encourage public participation in sustainability efforts.
World Cleanup Day, which began as a local initiative, has grown into a massive global movement, with millions of volunteers spanning almost every nation.
It has become a symbol of collective action, bringing together people from all walks of life to combat a common issue – mismanaged waste, and BASL has set a good example for other organisations, especially in the aviation sector, to follow.
