Cabin Crew to Cockpit: Olanike Balogun Becomes Nigeria Customs’ First Female Pilot
Deputy Superintendent of Customs (Pilot) Olanike Nafisat Balogun has shattered glass ceilings to become the first female pilot in the history of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), marking a groundbreaking achievement in the nation’s aviation and public service sectors.
Born in Kaduna and hailing from Odo-Otin Local Government Area, Osun State, Balogun’s remarkable journey began in 2002 when she was recruited into the NCS as a Customs Assistant.
Initially serving as a cabin crew member in the Service’s Airwing Unit, she harboured a vision of one day taking command of the cockpit.
In a recent interview, Balogun reflected on the challenges and triumphs that defined her journey. “Staying in the Service when many of my colleagues left for better-paying jobs with commercial airlines was a tough decision,” she recounted. “However, I was determined to contribute to public service and achieve my dream of becoming a pilot.”
Her persistence and ambition, coupled with the unwavering support of the NCS, set her on a path of continuous growth.
Balogun pursued an Advanced Diploma in Air Ticketing and Cabin Services, followed by a Master’s degree in Public Administration from Ahmadu Bello University.
With sponsorship from the NCS, she achieved her ultimate goal by earning her Pilot Certification from the prestigious Flying Academy in Miami, Florida.
Balogun’s ascent to the skies symbolises a beacon of hope for women in the Service and beyond. “Being the first female pilot in the NCS Airwing is not just a personal achievement but an opportunity to inspire women to dream bigger and aim higher,” she said. “My role reflects my passion for advancing my dreams and enhancing the operational capabilities of the NCS.”
Her trailblazing accomplishment has drawn accolades from her colleagues and leadership. Comptroller General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, lauded her as a symbol of resilience and institutional progress.
“Her story exemplifies what is possible with determination and institutional support,” Adeniyi stated.
Balogun’s commitment to inspiring others remains central to her mission. “I hope my journey motivates young Nigerians, especially women, to chase their dreams and break through barriers,” she affirmed.
