The Chairman of the Carnival Commission in Cross River State, Sir Gabe Onah, has announced that Carnival Calabar will be participating in the Creative Africa Nexus (CANEX) event in Algiers, Algeria, from the 15th to the 19th of October.

This marks a significant opportunity for the Carnival, as CANEX, an initiative supported by Afreximbank, focuses on tapping into Africa’s thriving creative and cultural industries.

“This event offers a global platform for our carnival performers to showcase their talent, giving much-needed exposure to CARNIVAL CALABAR – Africa’s largest street party,” Onah remarked.

He further revealed that advanced discussions are underway with Afreximbank, exploring the possibility of the bank sponsoring the Carnival.

As part of the agreement, the Carnival could be renamed ‘AFREXIMBank Carnival Calabar’ for a period of three to five years.

Onah underscored the importance of this partnership, explaining how it could elevate the Carnival’s international profile, positioning it as a symbol of African cultural pride.

“We are hopeful this partnership will drive more recognition for our Carnival, showcasing it as a true representation of our cultural legacy,” he added.

Onah made the announcement during his opening address at the first Dry Run 2024, which officially kicked off the Carnival Calabar season.

The dry run, held on the 13th of October, was characterised by vibrant performances and strong community involvement.

It was flagged off by the Speaker of the Cross River State House of Assembly, Honourable Elbert Ayambem, representing the Governor.

The event saw participation from band leaders, key members of the Cross River State Executive Council, and the newly appointed Commissioner of Police, all uniting to celebrate the commencement of the eagerly awaited carnival season.

As per tradition, all bands took part in testing the Carnival route, with the University of Calabar band contributing to the excitement, despite not competing.

The growing international appeal of the Carnival was evident, as tourists and tour operators were present in the city to witness the dry run, adding an international flavour to the occasion.

During the opening ceremony, Sir Gabe Onah praised the enduring spirit of the citizens, acknowledging their contribution to sustaining Carnival Calabar for two decades.

He expressed the state’s pride in hosting Africa’s largest street festival, a cultural event that continues to gain global recognition.

The first dry run of the 2024 Carnival Calabar season has set the stage for what promises to be another spectacular edition of Africa’s most celebrated street festival.
