The Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Adewale Adeniyi, on Wednesday, 30 April 2025, commissioned a newly renovated Local Authority Primary School and a Primary Healthcare Centre in the Sagbokoji community, located within Amuwo-Odofin Local Government Area of Lagos State.

The dual commissioning, carried out under the ‘Customs Cares’ initiative—a key aspect of the Service’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR)—is aimed at addressing pressing educational and infrastructural deficits in host communities.

While addressing dignitaries, community leaders, and residents during the ceremony, CGC Adeniyi reaffirmed the Customs Service’s commitment to impactful community engagement.

“We are undertaking projects that will have a direct impact on our schools and our students,” he stated. “We have brought school bags, exercise books, textbooks, and sandals for all the pupils of this school. We are also improving infrastructure, where we see the deficit, and what we have chosen to do is to renovate the entire school. And I’m happy that through Apapa and the stakeholders, we have been able to deliver on this project.”

Highlighting the broader scope of the initiative, Adeniyi noted that the provision of quality healthcare remains integral to sustainable community development.

“We know that the needs of this community are more than what we have done, but we have taken the first step towards entering into an enduring partnership with this community,” he added.

The Customs Area Controller of the Apapa Area Command, Comptroller Babatunde Olomu, whose office coordinated the project, described the initiative as a demonstration of the Service’s empathy and responsibility to the people it serves.

“The benevolence from Customs shows that we have compassion for the communities where we cohabit, and this was what informed this very project,” Olomu remarked. “In the last four weeks, it’s been both day and night—workers have been here, with the active support of our distinguished stakeholders, to ensure that this project actually sees the light of day.”

Chairman of Amuwo-Odofin Local Government Area, Engr. Valentine Buraimoh, in a goodwill message, expressed gratitude to the NCS, praising the gesture as unprecedented.

“This is the first time we are witnessing uniform men in the helm of affairs doing this kind of project. And today, I’m highly elated for this gesture. I want to appreciate the NCS for renovating our school and the Primary Healthcare Centre.”

Also speaking at the event, the Headmaster of LA Primary School, Mr Oladeyo Emmanuel, applauded the Customs Service’s intervention, noting that the improved learning environment would positively impact both teachers and pupils.

The colourful ceremony featured the distribution of learning materials to schoolchildren and concluded with the formal commissioning of both the school and the healthcare facility—two key institutions now revitalised to better serve the Sagbokoji community.
