Chidimma Adetshina, a 23-year-old model and law student, has triumphed in the Miss Universe Nigeria 2024 pageant, overcoming a turbulent journey marked by her controversial withdrawal from the Miss South Africa 2024 competition.

Adetshina, who was born to a Nigerian father and a Mozambican mother, was raised in Soweto, South Africa.

She had initially entered the Miss South Africa pageant with high hopes, but her participation was met with a xenophobic backlash from some South Africans who questioned her eligibility due to her Nigerian heritage.

Critics argued that her father’s nationality disqualified her from competing in the South African event.

The situation escalated when South Africa’s Home Affairs Minister, Leon Schreiber, launched an investigation into Adetshina’s citizenship.

The investigation, prompted by a request from the Miss South Africa organisers and widespread public outcry, uncovered claims that Adetshina’s mother might have stolen the identity of a South African woman.

These allegations further fueled the controversy, ultimately forcing Adetshina to withdraw from the competition.

Despite the challenges, Adetshina’s determination did not waver. She returned to Nigeria and entered the Miss Universe Nigeria 2024 pageant, representing Taraba State.

On Saturday night, her perseverance paid off as she was crowned the winner at the grand finale held at Eko Hotels & Suites in Lagos.

The event, organised by the Silverbird Group, saw Adetshina emerge victorious among 25 contestants from across the country.

Guy Murray-Bruce, President of Silverbird Group, announced her as the winner in a moment of triumph that was met with widespread applause.

In addition to the prestigious title, Adetshina will receive a cash prize of N10 million and other awards.

She will also represent Nigeria at the Miss Universe pageant in Mexico this November, where she will compete on the global stage.

Adetshina’s victory in the Miss Universe Nigeria pageant marks a significant milestone in her journey, symbolising resilience and the power of perseverance in the face of adversity.

As she prepares to represent Nigeria internationally, her story serves as an inspiration to many, embodying the spirit of overcoming obstacles and achieving greatness.
