The Comptroller General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Adewale Bashir Adeniyi, has been selected to receive the prestigious “The Continent Man of the Year 2024” Award.

This honour was conferred upon him by the Board of Editors and Publishers in partnership with The Continent Magazine, in recognition of his leadership and achievements within the NCS.

The announcement was made by Mr David Oladimeji, the Chief Executive Officer of Reporters’ Diary Communication Consult and spokesperson for the group, following a meeting held in Abuja on Friday.

The meeting was organised by The Continent Magazine to deliberate on the award recipients, focusing on individuals and organisations that have made significant contributions to the nation’s development.

One of the key reasons cited for Adeniyi’s selection was his instrumental role in ensuring the survival of Nigeria’s economy during challenging times.

Former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (C.B.N) and current Governor of Anambra State, Professor Chukwuma Soludo, had recently commended the NCS and the Federal Inland Revenue Service (F.I.R.S) for preventing the nation’s economy from collapsing.

Since February 2024, when the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (N.N.P.C.L) ceased remitting statutory revenue to the Federation Account, the Customs and F.I.R.S have been pivotal in sustaining the economy, according to Soludo.

Oladimeji noted that the Board of Editors was particularly impressed by the leadership of C.G.C Adeniyi, who has managed to steer the Customs Service through difficult times despite the public’s perception of the agency as being rife with corruption.

“This is not an easy task to achieve under the astute and dedicated leadership of C.G.C Adeniyi,” he remarked.

In addition to Adeniyi’s award, the Board also resolved to honour his Command Controllers and Revenue Collectors with the “Pillars of Nigerian Economy 2024” Award.

This recognition is intended to commend and encourage the efforts of the NCS and F.I.R.S in their anti-smuggling operations and revenue collection duties.

As preparations for the awards ceremony continue, a special edition of The Continent Magazine will be published, detailing the profiles and achievements of Adeniyi and other deserving recipients.

The ceremony date is yet to be announced, but it is expected to be a significant celebration of national and international figures who have made noteworthy contributions to their respective fields.

C.G.C Adewale Adeniyi’s recognition as “The Continent Man of the Year 2024” underscores his leadership and the pivotal role played by the Nigeria Customs Service in stabilising the nation’s economy amidst challenging circumstances.
