Dangote Unveils Sugar Refinery Project in Ghana to Curb Imports, Boost Agro-Industrial Growth

Renowned Nigerian businessman and Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, has announced plans to establish a massive sugar refinery in Ghana, a landmark move aimed at significantly reducing the country’s dependence on sugar imports and accelerating industrialisation under the government’s One District, One Factory (1D1F) initiative.
The proposed facility, to be known as the Dangote Sugar Refinery, will be sited in Kwame-Danso in the Bono Region, and is poised to become a key driver of Ghana’s agro-industrial transformation.
Dangote made the announcement via his official LinkedIn page, describing the project as a monumental stride in Ghana’s economic journey.
“We’re thrilled to announce the launch of a major agro-industrial project in Kwame-Danso, Bono Region: Dangote Sugar Refinery,” Dangote wrote. “This is a new chapter in Ghana’s economic journey.”
The refinery forms part of the Ghanaian government’s flagship 1D1F initiative, which seeks to decentralise industrial development by promoting the establishment of factories in each of the country’s districts.
With Ghana currently spending approximately US$162 million annually on sugar imports, the project is expected to make a significant dent in that figure by providing a sustainable, locally sourced alternative.
Key features of the Dangote Sugar Refinery project include: Daily sugarcane crushing capacity of 12,000 tonnes; irrigation infrastructure covering 25,000 hectares of farmland; integrated production lines for sugar, molasses, and ethanol.
Dangote confirmed that all regulatory and procedural milestones have been met, with land acquisition completed and relevant permits secured, thereby clearing the path for full-scale execution.
“With land secured and necessary permits obtained, we’re moving forward with the support of Ghana’s ‘One District, One Factory’ initiative,” he stated. “This project tackles Ghana’s US$162 million sugar import bill while fostering a sustainable, homegrown solution.”
Beyond economic considerations, Dangote stressed the broader vision of the project, which aligns with continental aspirations for self-sufficiency, industrial development, and economic empowerment.
“At Dangote, we envision more than just a factory. We see a catalyst for economic independence, job creation, and transformative impact across Africa. Join us in shaping the continent’s future,” he added.
The project also signifies the Dangote Group’s expanding footprint in West Africa and underscores its commitment to regional development, particularly in the areas of food security, agro-processing, and employment generation.
The refinery is expected to create thousands of jobs spanning agriculture, logistics, and manufacturing sectors, thereby providing a significant boost to local livelihoods and national GDP.
This strategic investment reaffirms Dangote’s role not only as a key industrialist in Africa but also as a visionary championing pan-African economic integration and sustainability.
