Ethiopian Airlines Boosts Abuja Connectivity with Three Extra Weekly Flights from October

Abuja, Nigeria’s Federal Capital Territory, is steadily cementing its place as a preferred destination for international conferences and meetings, with the Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Events/Exhibitions (MICE) sector emerging as a strong pillar of its tourism and business profile.

In line with this growing trend, Africa’s largest carrier, Ethiopian Airlines, has announced the introduction of three additional weekly flights to Abuja from 28 October 2025.

The development comes on the heels of the Nigerian Government’s reopening of the Abuja International Conference Centre, reinforcing the city’s position as a hub for international gatherings. With more world-class venues and facilities provided by leading hotels, Abuja is increasingly attracting business travellers and global events.

Ethiopian Airlines, which currently operates a daily midday flight out of Abuja, will now expand its service to include three evening departures weekly. The new schedule will see flights leave Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport at 10 p.m. (ET 957) and arrive in Addis Ababa at 5 a.m., perfectly timed to connect with onward flights to major African and Asian destinations.

Speaking on the expansion, Ethiopian Airlines’ Area Manager in Nigeria, Mrs Firiehiwot Mekonnen, explained that the move was designed not only to increase connectivity but also to enhance passenger benefits.

“We are offering these extra benefits to reward our loyal passengers as we offer more flights and options out of Abuja. These extra flights help us improve service delivery and reduce costs for travellers. Most of our passengers will now arrive at their destinations faster,” she said.

In addition to increased frequency, the new service comes with special incentives for passengers. Travellers to destinations such as Mumbai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Chennai and Dubai will enjoy extra baggage allowances, while frequent flyers stand to gain double miles on the added routes.

According to Ethiopian Airlines, the evening flights will provide more seamless connections to destinations including Dubai (DXB), São Paulo (GRU), Tel Aviv (TLV) and other African cities, reducing overall travel time.

Ethiopian Airlines has maintained a strong presence in Nigeria since 1960, steadily expanding its footprint across Abuja, Lagos, Enugu and Kano. With one of the youngest fleets in the world, including the Airbus A350-1000 and the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, the airline connects Nigerian cities to over 150 global destinations, positioning itself as a vital link between West Africa and the rest of the world.

The additional Abuja flights are expected to further strengthen Nigeria’s role in international air travel and bolster Abuja’s ambition of becoming a leading African hub for MICE tourism.
