Ethiopian Airlines Partners with Satarem to Pioneer Sustainable Aviation Fuel in Ethiopia
Africa’s largest carrier, Ethiopian Airlines Group has taken a monumental step in its commitment to sustainability by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Satarem America Inc.
This partnership aims to produce and utilise Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) within Ethiopia, marking a significant move towards a more environmentally friendly future for the aviation industry.
Under the agreement, Satarem, a leading provider of sustainable energy solutions, will produce SAF locally, and Ethiopian Airlines has committed to acquiring this fuel for its operations.
This strategic partnership will allow Ethiopian Airlines to integrate SAF into its fleet, significantly reducing carbon emissions and supporting global efforts to combat climate change.
SAF, a cleaner alternative to traditional jet fuel, is produced from sustainable feedstocks and has the potential to lower greenhouse gas emissions substantially.
By adopting SAF, Ethiopian Airlines demonstrates its dedication to innovative and eco-friendly aviation solutions.
Mr. Mesfin Tasew, Chief Executive Officer of Ethiopian Airlines Group, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, stating, “We are excited to partner with Satarem America Inc. in our journey towards a greener and more sustainable future.
“The adoption of Sustainable Aviation Fuel is not just a business decision; it reflects our commitment to combating climate change and investing in innovative solutions that support a sustainable industry.”
This collaboration with Satarem America Inc. reaffirms Ethiopian Airlines’ status as a pioneer in eco-friendly aviation.
The airline has a longstanding history of implementing sustainability initiatives, including fleet modernisation, optimised flight operations, tree planting, and extensive recycling programs.
The integration of SAF into its operations will further enhance these efforts, substantially reducing the greenhouse gas emissions associated with air travel.
As one of Africa’s largest and most experienced airlines, Ethiopian Airlines continues to lead the way in sustainability, setting high standards for environmental performance in the aviation industry.
