Ethiopian Airlines resumes daily flights to historic city of Axum

Ethiopian Airlines Group, the largest airline group in Africa, has announced the reinstatement of its daily passenger flights to the historic city of Axum, starting June 9, 2024. 

This resumption follows the successful completion of extensive maintenance work on the airfield and terminal facilities, costing 290 million Ethiopian Birr (ETB).

Ethiopian Airlines Group CEO, Mr. Mesfin Tasew, expressed his enthusiasm for the renewed service to Axum, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its profound cultural significance. 

“We are truly pleased to reinstate our flights to Axum, a cultural UNESCO World Heritage Site renowned for its cultural significance,” said Tasew. 

“Our return to Axum with a daily service after the massive investment in airport facility maintenance is a testament to our commitment to boosting air transportation services in the country. As a national carrier, we are determined to invest in and improve our flight offerings nationwide,” he added.

The city of Axum, home to the ancient Axumite Kingdom, holds a pivotal place in Ethiopian history, symbolising one of the oldest civilisations. 

The airline said resumption of flights to this historic city underscores its dedication to connecting travellers with Ethiopia’s rich cultural heritage.

Currently, Ethiopian Airlines serves 20 domestic destinations and is committed to expanding its domestic reach and enhancing the quality of its services. 

The airline’s dedication to improving aviation infrastructure is evident in its recent initiatives. 

This includes the inauguration of the $50 million transformed Addis Ababa Bole Domestic Terminal, which marks a significant milestone in enhancing the travel experience within Ethiopia. 

Additionally, the group has launched new modern terminals in Gode and Jinka, with the Wako Gutu Airport Terminal in Bale Robe set to be unveiled soon.

Ethiopian Airlines’ ongoing efforts to construct and modernise aviation infrastructure across the country reflect its mission to provide unparalleled service and foster better connectivity within Ethiopia.
