Ethiopian Airlines Unveils State-of-the-Art Engine Test Cell in Addis Ababa

Ethiopian Airlines, Africa’s largest airline group and leading MRO (Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul) operator, has inaugurated its cutting-edge CFM Leap-1B engine test cell at its MRO Services facility in Addis Ababa.

This milestone grants Ethiopian Airlines full testing capability for the Leap-1B engine, the exclusive power plant for Boeing’s new-generation 737 MAX single-aisle jets.

Announcing the huge achievement in a statement, Ethiopian Airlines Group Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Mesfin Tasew, expressed his pride in this significant achievement. “We feel proud for achieving full testing capability for the CFM Leap-1B engine at our modern MRO facility in Addis Ababa,” Tasew stated.

He further highlighted that this state-of-the-art facility will enable the airline to complete the development of Performance Restoration Shop Visit (PRSV1) repair capability on the engine, with readiness expected very soon.

Tasew extended appreciation to SAE, GE, and other partners who contributed to this success.

The newly launched Leap-1B testing facility places Ethiopian Airlines among an elite group of only five facilities globally, outside the Safran Aero Engines (SAE) and General Electric (GE) networks, to possess such advanced capability. It is also the first in the Middle East and Africa to offer these services.

Ethiopian Airlines has ambitious plans to complete the Phase 2 Performance Restoration Shop Visit (PRSV1) project by the end of September 2024.

This advancement will enable the airline to provide Leap-1B PRSV solutions to customers both within the region and internationally.

Ethiopian Airlines operates the largest MRO Service facility in Africa, established in 1957. The facility offers Line Maintenance services at Ethiopian’s various flight stations and extends these services to operators in Africa and the Middle East.

Equipped with comprehensive Hangars, Engine and Component Maintenance workshops, the Ethiopian MRO facility is capable of repairing and overhauling aircraft, engines, and components.

Certified by the Ethiopian Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), and European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), among others, Ethiopian MRO provides world-class services, contributing to Ethiopian Airlines’ reputation as one of the most dependable and safest airlines globally.
