FAAN Clarifies Alleged Illegal Cargo Charges at Lagos Airport, Says Viral Video Misleading
The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has addressed a recent online video showing a confrontation between its staff and a cargo agent at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) Terminal.
Contrary to initial reports suggesting the individual was a passenger, FAAN clarified that the person involved was a cargo agent engaging in unauthorised activities at the airport.
According to Mrs. Obiageli Orah, Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection at FAAN, the cargo agent refused to pay the required levies for her cargo and acted inappropriately, causing damage to airport equipment.
FAAN firmly stated that no molestation or demand for bribes occurred during the incident, describing the claims as an act of blackmail.
“The individual was simply avoiding payment of the stipulated charges and, in the process, damaged airport equipment, which placed a strain on our resources. Our staff were ensuring the correct levies were paid, and at no point was any improper behaviour exhibited by FAAN personnel,” Orah explained.
FAAN also reminded the public and cargo operators of its policies governing cargo handling at the airport. Cargo operations must take place in designated areas, with proper vehicles and personnel, and all levies must be paid accordingly.
The authority imposed a N5,000 fine on non-compliant cargo operations, particularly in cases where designated cargo terminals are not used, or airport equipment, such as carousels, is damaged due to improper handling.
The agency reiterated that these cargo policies are in line with international best practices and are designed to safeguard airport facilities, ensure customer safety, and maintain a high standard of service.
FAAN has urged cargo agents and the public to comply with airport regulations to avoid similar incidents in the future, highlighting the importance of collaboration to ensure the safe and efficient operation of the airport.
The authority remains committed to enforcing clear guidelines and providing quality service to enhance the overall airport experience for all users.
