The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has taken a significant step towards improving aviation safety by commissioning the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) Wildlife Hazard Control Equipment.

The equipment, which aims to mitigate the threat posed by bird strikes at airports across the country, was inaugurated at the Murtala Muhammed Airport (MMA) in Lagos today.

Mrs Olubunmi Kuku, the Managing Director of FAAN, highlighted the importance of this development, noting that the equipment will greatly enhance the safety measures in Nigeria’s aviation sector.

Kuku, who was represented by the Director of Airport Operations, Captain Abdullahi Mohmood, explained that FAAN’s decision to procure the equipment was driven by the growing dangers wildlife poses to air safety, particularly bird strikes.

“Over the years, bird strikes have presented a serious threat to air safety. Today, we are pleased to receive this equipment from ICAO. After the commissioning, it will be distributed to various airports across the country, where it will be properly utilised to mitigate wildlife hazards,” Kuku remarked.

Kuku further underscored the impact bird strikes have had on the aviation industry, citing recent incidents that fortunately did not lead to accidents.

However, she acknowledged that even without accidents, bird strikes have caused significant damage to aircraft engines, resulting in operational challenges for airlines, including flight delays and cancellations.

“Though we have been fortunate that these strikes have not led to accidents, they do cause serious damage to aircraft engines, leading to major disruptions for airlines,” Kuku said.

While Kuku did not disclose the exact cost of the equipment, she confirmed that millions of Naira were spent on the project.

She also expressed gratitude to airline operators for their patience and cooperation during the challenges posed by wildlife hazards.

In her vote of thanks, the General Manager of Environmental Services at FAAN, Mrs Nanlo Christopher, praised the FAAN management for ensuring the safe delivery of the equipment.

She also acknowledged the ongoing issues caused by bird strikes and expressed optimism that the new equipment would significantly reduce these incidents.

“The issue of bird strikes has been a persistent challenge, with incidents occurring almost weekly. However, with the arrival of this equipment, we are hopeful that the situation will improve,” Christopher stated.

She urged for an enhanced procurement process to avoid future delays and appreciated airline operators for their understanding, noting that despite the difficulties, they did not resort to legal action.

The newly commissioned equipment marks a critical step forward in FAAN’s commitment to improving air safety and addressing the long-standing menace of bird strikes in Nigeria’s aviation industry.
