FAAN Earns Dual ISO 9001 and 14001 Certifications, Sets New Benchmark for Nigerian Airports
The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has recorded a major institutional milestone with the attainment of two prestigious international certifications – ISO 9001:2015 for Quality Management Systems and ISO 14001:2015 for Environmental Management Systems – underscoring a renewed commitment to global best practices in airport operations and environmental stewardship.
The dual certifications were formally presented to FAAN’s Managing Director and Chief Executive, Mrs Olubunmi Kuku, at the Authority’s headquarters in Lagos, following an extensive process involving months of structured reforms, intensive internal audits, and the strengthening of operational and environmental controls across the organisation.
ISO 9001:2015 is a globally recognised standard that attests to an organisation’s ability to consistently deliver quality services, meet customer and regulatory expectations, and embed continuous improvement into its operations.
ISO 14001:2015, meanwhile, confirms that an organisation has effective systems in place to manage its environmental responsibilities, minimise pollution, comply with environmental regulations, and promote sustainable and responsible operations.
Awarded by MSECB, Canada, the certifications validate that FAAN’s quality and environmental management systems now conform to internationally accepted standards.
Aviation stakeholders say the development firmly places Nigeria’s airport authority among modern and competitive airport operators worldwide.
The achievement is being widely attributed to the leadership of Mrs Kuku, whose tenure has been marked by a strong focus on institutional reform, accountability, and performance excellence.
Widely regarded as a reform-driven administrator, she has prioritised airport development, human capacity building, and the adoption of globally benchmarked processes since assuming office.
In December 2025, Mrs Kuku marked her second year as Managing Director/Chief Executive of FAAN, earning commendation from staff, industry observers, and other stakeholders.
Analysts note that her insistence on process discipline and international benchmarking has helped reposition FAAN towards systems that promote consistency, transparency, and long-term sustainability.
Industry insiders describe the dual ISO certifications as the culmination of a deliberate transformation anchored on the implementation of an Integrated Management System (IMS) within FAAN.
The IMS harmonised procedures across departments, strengthened internal governance and controls, and entrenched a culture of continuous improvement throughout the Authority.
This transformation, observers say, has enabled FAAN to transition from reactive management practices to proactive, standards-driven governance capable of supporting efficient and sustainable airport operations.
Beyond their symbolic value, the certifications are expected to deliver tangible operational benefits. ISO 9001:2015 ensures that FAAN’s quality management framework prioritises customer satisfaction, risk-based thinking, efficiency, and accountability, leading to more consistent service delivery and improved operational outcomes.
ISO 14001:2015 reinforces the Authority’s commitment to environmental responsibility, covering waste management, resource efficiency, regulatory compliance, and the mitigation of environmental impacts across airport operations nationwide.
Taken together, the certifications enhance FAAN’s credibility with international airlines, regulators, development partners, and the travelling public, while strengthening Nigeria’s position in an increasingly competitive global aviation market.
As FAAN consolidates this achievement, aviation stakeholders are expected to closely monitor how the Authority sustains and deepens these standards through continuous audits, skills development, environmental innovation, and customer-focused reforms.
With Mrs Olubunmi Kuku at the helm, industry observers remain optimistic that FAAN will continue to raise the bar in quality and environmental management across Nigeria’s airport system.
