The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has commenced a two-day Board Retreat aimed at strengthening governance, modernising operations, and positioning Nigeria’s airports for greater global competitiveness.

The retreat, themed “Future-Proofing FAAN: Leadership, Modernisation and Strategic Renewal,” began today and brings together key aviation stakeholders, including Board Members, Executive Directors, senior management, and representatives from the Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development.

The programme opened with a distinguished assembly led by the Chairman of the FAAN Board, Dr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, who praised the Authority for organising the initiative.

He noted that the retreat would serve as a significant catalyst for institutional improvement, expressing confidence that the sessions would be “highly rewarding and impactful for the future of the Authority.”

The Honourable Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr Festus Keyamo, SAN, CON, was represented by the Permanent Secretary, Dr Yakubu Adam Kafarmata. In his remarks, he conveyed the Minister’s optimism about the retreat’s potential to transform the sector.

“May your deliberations be productive, and your outcomes transformative for FAAN, for the aviation sector, and for Nigeria,” he said while declaring the retreat open.

Also in attendance were Senator Abdulfatai Buhari, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Aviation, and Hon. Festus Akingbaso, Deputy Chairman of the House Committee on Aviation, representing the House Committee Chairman. Their presence signalled strong legislative support for ongoing reforms within the Authority.

The retreat has been designed as a critical platform to deepen synergy between the Board and Management, strengthen governance systems, clarify strategic priorities, and review operational, infrastructural, and financial frameworks across FAAN’s network of airports.

Participants are also expected to chart a forward-looking roadmap that emphasises innovation, efficiency, sustainability, and alignment with national aviation development goals.

FAAN’s Managing Director/Chief Executive, Mrs Olubunmi Oluwaseun Kuku, emphasised the importance of the gathering, stating that it provides an opportunity to reflect on FAAN’s milestones, reassess prevailing challenges, and envision a modern, responsive, and globally competitive airport system for Nigeria.

According to FAAN, the combined representation of the Board, Ministry, and National Assembly underscores a unified resolve to strengthen institutional resilience, advance strategic reforms, and deliver enhanced service excellence across Nigerian airports.

At the end of the two-day engagement, the retreat is expected to yield actionable resolutions and a strategic roadmap that will further propel FAAN on its journey towards leadership, modernisation, and long-term operational excellence.
