The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has taken a significant step towards sustainable aviation operations with the launch of zero-emission electric transit services at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport (NAIA), Abuja. The initiative underscores FAAN’s growing commitment to renewable energy adoption and emissions reduction across Nigeria’s aviation infrastructure.

The project, developed in partnership with Possible Electric Mobility and Zeut Energies, introduces a fleet of electric vehicles designed to provide seamless transportation for passengers and airport staff to and from the airport.

By replacing conventional fossil fuel-powered vehicles, the initiative is expected to substantially reduce carbon emissions while aligning airport operations with global green energy and environmental sustainability standards.

The commissioning ceremony was led by the Chairman of the FAAN Board, His Excellency Dr Abdullahi Ganduje, who was accompanied by the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Mrs Olubunmi Kuku. Also present were FAAN Directors, General Managers, Heads of Departments, representatives of partner organisations and other key stakeholders within the aviation sector.

Speaking at the event, Dr Ganduje described the initiative as a milestone in FAAN’s efforts to modernise airport infrastructure while responding to the global call for climate-conscious development.

He expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his leadership and support of policies that promote sustainability, as well as to the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr Festus Keyamo, SAN, for driving reforms in the sector. The Board Chairman also commended the FAAN management under Mrs Kuku and the development partners for their commitment to delivering environmentally responsible projects.

In her remarks, Mrs Kuku reaffirmed FAAN’s determination to transition towards cleaner energy solutions across all its operations. She noted that the Authority has already implemented several energy optimisation measures, including the installation of energy-efficient lighting systems, deployment of solar-powered lighting within airport terminals, and improved waste recycling processes.

According to her, these initiatives are aimed at reducing FAAN’s dependence on fossil fuels while enhancing operational efficiency.
Mrs Kuku further emphasised that the introduction of electric transit services at NAIA is part of a broader strategy to embed sustainability into airport management nationwide.

She expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Minister of Aviation, the FAAN Board Chairman and members, the management team of Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, as well as development partners and stakeholders, for their continued support and collaboration.

The event concluded with a guided inspection of the newly introduced electric buses and sedans by Dr Ganduje and Mrs Kuku. The inspection provided an opportunity for stakeholders to examine the vehicles’ advanced features and assess their potential impact on reducing emissions and improving ground transportation within the airport environment.

With the launch of the zero-emission electric transit services, FAAN positions itself as a leading institution in the drive towards sustainable aviation infrastructure in Nigeria, setting a benchmark for environmentally responsible airport operations across the region.
