FAAN reopens runway 18L/36R after Dana Air incident

After an eventful morning that saw the temporary closure of Runway 18L/36R at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has successfully reopened the runway for flight operations.

In a statement signed by Mrs. Obiageli Orah, the Director of Public Affairs & Consumer Protection at FAAN, the agency explained that the incident, which occurred earlier today, involved Dana Air flight with registration number 5N-BKI, as it overshot the runway during its landing sequence.

However, prompt action by the airport’s emergency response team swiftly evacuated and recovered the aircraft from the site.

In ensuring the safety of all flight operations, FAAN further explained that comprehensive clearing operations were immediately conducted to remove any potential Foreign Object Debris (FOD) that could pose a threat to flight safety.

The statement added that FAAN’s Operations division, in collaboration with the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA), carried out a thorough inspection of the runway surface and deemed it safe for the resumption of operations.

To inform air traffic, the agency affirmed that “an appropriate Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) has been issued in this regard.”

Acknowledging the challenges posed by the muddy area where the overshoot occurred, FAAN highlighted the concerted effort made to efficiently clean the affected area, facilitating the swift reopening of Runway 18L/36R.

Expressing gratitude, the agency thanked the traveling public, airline partners, and all stakeholders for their patience, understanding, and cooperation during the temporary closure.

“We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience this incident may have caused.

“Ensuring the safety and security of our passengers, staff, and airport operations remains our top priority. FAAN is committed to providing a safe, secure, and efficient air transport environment for all users of our airports,” the agency said.
