FAAN Rescue Team Responds Promptly as United Airlines Flight Makes Emergency Return to Lagos
The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) successfully managed an emergency air return involving a United Airlines Boeing 787-800 flight, which departed from Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos, at 23:59 on Thursday, January 23, 2025.
In a statement signed by Mrs Obiageli Orah, Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection at FAAN, the agency disclosed that the aircraft returned to Lagos and landed safely at 03:22 on Friday morning after the pilot declared distress at 01:20.
The flight, carrying 245 passengers and 11 crew members, faced no damage upon landing.
However, four passengers and two crew members sustained serious injuries, while 27 passengers and five crew members reported minor injuries.
FAAN’s Aerodrome Rescue and Fire Fighting Services (ARFFS), alongside Aviation Medical and Aviation Security (AVSEC) teams, responded swiftly and effectively, ensuring the safe evacuation of all 256 individuals aboard.
The aircraft taxied to gate D31, where rescue personnel were already on standby.
By 03:37, all passengers and crew had disembarked.
Injured individuals were promptly attended to, with ambulances transporting those with serious injuries to the Duchess Hospital in Ikeja after initial stabilisation at the MMA and Headquarters Clinics.
Passengers with minor injuries received first aid and were discharged shortly afterwards.
Others were provided accommodation at nearby hotels.
The Authority commended the coordinated efforts of the rescue teams and assured the public that updates would be provided as more information becomes available.
