FAAN shuts down KFC outlet at MMIA following discrimination allegations

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has closed the KFC facility at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos, a decisive move aimed at upholding the rights of passengers with disabilities.

This action comes after reports of discriminatory treatment towards a Passenger with Reduced Mobility (PRM) surfaced on social media, prompting swift intervention from FAAN’s management.

The incident, which allegedly occurred at MMIA, led to the deployment of a high-level management team by FAAN, including Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku, the Managing Director/Chief Executive, along with Mrs. Obiageli Orah, Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Mr. Sunday Ayodele, Regional Manager South West, Mrs. Ijeoma Nwosu-Igbo, Ag. General Manager Public Affairs, and Mr. Kerri, the International Terminal Manager, to investigate the matter.

Based on the findings of the investigative team, FAAN has taken the unprecedented step of shutting down the KFC facility at MMIA where the alleged discrimination took place.

Additionally, FAAN has directed the management of KFC to issue an unreserved written apology to the affected PRM and to prominently display a policy statement of non-discrimination at their facility before resuming operations.

Expressing regret over the incident in a statement signed by Mrs. Obiageli Orah, Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, the agency stated, “FAAN uses this medium to express our unreserved apology to the affected Passenger with Reduced Mobility and assures all airport users that we shall continue to work tirelessly to ensure that the rights of every passenger are not infringed upon.”

The closure of the KFC outlet at MMIA underscores FAAN’s commitment to fostering an inclusive environment at Nigeria’s airports and serves as a reminder of the importance of upholding the rights of all passengers, regardless of their physical abilities.

The agency said this action aligns with Lagos State law on People with Special Needs, Part C, section 55 of General Provisions on Discrimination, which prohibits denying individuals access to public places, vehicles, or facilities based on their disability status.

FAAN’s proactive response sets a precedent for addressing discrimination within the aviation industry and sends a clear message that such behavior will not be tolerated.

As the aviation sector continues to evolve, FAAN’s dedication to ensuring equal access and treatment for all passengers sets a commendable standard for other stakeholders to emulate, reaffirming Nigeria’s commitment to inclusivity and respect for human rights.

According to FAAN, closure of the facility takes effect today – March 28, 2024.
